Mohammad Tahir Anwar, the elder brother of the notorious Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar, reportedly died under mysterious circumstances in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, on Monday. Indian intelligence sources and pro-JeM social media channels confirmed the death of Anwar, who was a senior figure within the banned terror outfit.
While his funeral was held at the Jamia Masjid Usman-o-Ali, the exact cause of death remains undisclosed, sparking speculation regarding internal rifts or health complications. This development follows a period of heightened scrutiny and previous targeted operations against JeM’s leadership infrastructure in the region.
A Key Operative in the Shadows
Known as Hakim Mohammad Tahir, Anwar was far more than just a sibling to one of the world’s most wanted men; he was a pivotal cog in the JeM machinery. Intelligence reports suggest he supervised armed cadres and managed logistical operations at the group’s headquarters in Bahawalpur.
While he maintained a lower public profile than Masood Azhar, officials consider his death a significant blow to the organisation’s internal hierarchy. “Anwar was actively involved in the outfit’s activities and led the Markaz Usman-o-Ali,” an intelligence source noted, highlighting his role in maintaining the group’s operational readiness.
His sudden passing, with no prior reports of illness, has led monitors to closely observe the transition of power within the family-run terror network.
Context of a Crumbling Stronghold
The death of Tahir Anwar occurs against a backdrop of increasing pressure on Jaish-e-Mohammed. In late 2025, reports emerged of ‘Operation Sindoor,’ a series of strikes targeting JeM facilities in Bahawalpur following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.
These strikes reportedly eliminated several of Azhar’s close relatives, including his sister and nephew. Last year, a senior JeM commander made a rare admission of these losses, acknowledging that the group’s core leadership family was being systematically depleted.
Anwar’s death is the latest in a string of high-profile departures from the group, which has been linked to major strikes in India, including the 2001 Parliament attack and the 2019 Pulwama tragedy.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that the cycle of violence and terror only serves to destabilise the prospect of a peaceful South Asia. While the death of an operative associated with such a violent legacy may be seen through a strategic lens, it also serves as a somber reminder of the lives lost to extremist ideologies on all sides.
We stand firm in our commitment to a world governed by dialogue and harmony, where the energy of the youth is channelled into social progress rather than conflict. True security is built not just through the removal of threats, but through the active cultivation of empathy and coexistence across borders.
