My Story: My Students Gave Their Pocket Money To Buy New Clothes For Their Classmate From A Poor Family

“Yesterday when I stepped inside Class VI B, all the boys screamed in unison, ‘Sir, have you bought your new clothes for Durga Puja?’ It was an unusual question for me, especially when coming from these kids. Instead of answering, I asked them, ‘How many of you have already bought? Raise your hands.’

Everyone’s hands were up in the air, except for two. I went near the two gloomy faces and asked them the reason. The first student told me his father works in the electric office, where he has to work even on Sundays, so he has not yet found time to buy his son a new shirt. The other boy was Deb Durlabh. His father works as a daily labourer, and his mother peddles fish, roaming from one street to the other, all day.

‘Last year, Baba bought me a new dress. I am not sure about this year,’ was his honest confession. ‘Ma fell ill a few days ago, I don’t think I will get one this time,’ he continued.

There was pin-drop silence in the classroom, which otherwise buzzes with their lively spirit.

I was spellbound when one of the students broke the silence, ‘Sir, each of us will give some of our pocket money. Then we can buy a new dress for Deb.’ Before I could express my amazement, he added, ‘Sir, you also need to help us.’

‘How can I help?’ I asked. ‘Sir, you also have to give us some money, if our funds fall short,’ he requested. I agreed instantly.

Today I went to class to find them waiting eagerly. At recess, all of us went out to a shop near the school. Deb finally got his ‘new dress’. The little faces were gleaming with happiness and pride. The moment got captured forever in my smartphone as well as my heart.”
