In a horrific incident, a 26-year-old woman living in a village in outskirts of Muzaffarnagar town was brutally raped. She was gang-raped by her husband and brother-in-law over dowry. The incident happened on March 6 but came to light on March 14, reported The Times Of India.

Report says that the incident happened on the night of the wedding and the father-in-law and mother-in-law of the victim locked the door from the outside. She kept bleeding the whole night and was taken to hospital only the next day. She is recovering now after the surgery.

Based on a complaint by the victim’s family, the police have registered a case against the accused family under under sections 376-D (gang-rape), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of Indian Penal Code and under Dowry Act.

The brother of the victim said, “The accused and his relative got drunk on the night of wedding and raped her. His family is greedy and they were demanding dowry. I have spent Rs 7 lakh on my sister’s wedding.”

The Logical Indian Take

The crime is appalling to say the least and it brings to fore the regressive mindset. Every hour 39 rapes are reported in our country. We live in 21st century and might believe that the days of dowry are over, but it still exists. This incident of such heinous crime should force us all to think and act against such social evils.
