ISRO To Adopt Drought-Hit Karnataka Village
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) which has reached into new realms of space has also proved that it is still rooted in the country’s soil by adopting drought-hit Karnataka Village to prevent Farmer suicides.
Farmer suicides cases which have remained a problem for the past few years have in the recent past grown at an alarming rate. Karnataka has been facing a spectre of suicides, but with the recent move by ISRO, there has been a sigh of relief amongst farmers.
The marketing segment Antrix Corporation Limited, of ISRO, has decided to adopt drought affected Brahmasandra village in Sira Taluk of Tumakuru district, Karnataka. The primary motive behind this adoption is to improve the lifestyle of farmers thereby making agriculture profitable.
As a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, ISRO will be collaborating with Bharatiya Agro-Industries Foundation (BAIF) to improve the conditions of the village. They have a budget of Rs 3.81 crores for five years.
The number of the households in the village are 356 and their livelihood mostly depends upon agriculture. ISRO has contemplated creating a sustainable model for the village where there will be a smart infrastructure, support services, hi-tech skill and market linkages. The villages will have modern methods of farming to make their job more efficient so that it will stay self-sufficient even after five years.
Apart from agricultural issues, there will be a focus on other concerns like water scarcity, proper drainage system and waste management.
The Logical Indian applauds the decision of ISRO, the organisation which has been doing wonders in the space realm, for also driving change much closer to home.
