Delhi, Gujarat Tops The List For Counterfeit Currency; Read To Know More

Even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation on November 8 to curb black money, production of counterfeit notes did not stop. Within the first 53 days of demonetisation, that is from November 8 to December 31, 2016, government agencies seized 2,272 fake Rs 2,000 notes.

According to National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) latest report released on November 30, 2017, a total of 2,272 fake notes of Rs 2,000 denomination were seized last year.

Fake notes across the country

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s model state Gujarat had the maximum counterfeit Rs. 2000 note seizure. Almost 40% of the seized notes are from Gujarat. Punjab, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan follow the state.

Three notes were seized from Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Haryana each. One such note was found in Manipur. Two notes were seized from Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir each.

No fake notes were found in Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Sikkim and Chhattisgarh.

Notes of other denominations such as old 500 and 1000 rupee notes were also seized. According to the data, the face value of the total fake notes found in 2016 is Rs 1,01,222,821. A total of 1,172 FIRs were registered and 1,107 people were arrested for their involvement in the illegal trade.

According to the face value of all the seized notes, Delhi tops the list. Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Assam, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand follow after Delhi.
