Swatantra Bhardwaj, the social media influencer accused of assaulting the father of student activist Nishu Aazad during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, has been arrested by Delhi Police and sent to one-day police custody. His arrest on Friday, September 4, came amid growing pressure from supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), who had gathered outside Parliament Street Police Station demanding his immediate arrest.
Protesters also objected to what they called excessive provisions under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the first information report (FIR). Security was tightened around the police station, with personnel from the Delhi Police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed.
Bhardwaj was detained in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, hours after Delhi Police assured the protesters that he would be arrested within 72 hours. He was subsequently produced before a court and remanded to one day of police custody. Bhardwaj, meanwhile, has maintained that he acted in self-defence during the confrontation.
Protesters Demand Action
The arrest followed a day of demonstrations outside Parliament Street Police Station, where CJP supporters, along with political representatives, gathered to demand action against Bhardwaj. The protesters alleged that the initial police response to the assault on Sanjay Aazad, Nishu’s father, was inadequate and called for stronger legal provisions to be applied. A delegation comprising CJP representatives, including Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, along with Aazad Samaj Party leader and MP Chandrashekhar Aazad and members of the Congress, met Delhi Police officials.
Following the meeting, protesters said the police had agreed to invoke relevant provisions of the SC/ST Act and assured them that Bhardwaj would be arrested within 72 hours. Sanjay Aazad also said the police had agreed to examine whether more serious charges could be added based on medical evidence.
The police presence outside the station was subsequently strengthened as crowds gathered. The deployment of Delhi Police, ITBP, BSF and RAF personnel reflected concerns over possible escalation during the demonstration. The protesters, however, continued to demand that the case be pursued through due legal process. Nishu Aazad has also sought security for herself and her family, saying she feared further attacks and alleged that threats had been made against her. The police have been examining available video footage, medical records and witness accounts as part of the investigation.
From Jantar Mantar Confrontation To Arrest
The case relates to a confrontation during a CJP protest at Jantar Mantar, where Bhardwaj is accused of assaulting Sanjay Aazad. The controversy intensified after a video from a podcast circulated online in which Bhardwaj appeared to speak about striking Sanjay and claimed that he had avoided arrest. The remarks triggered demands for his immediate arrest and renewed public attention on the earlier incident.
CJP representatives alleged that Sanjay had suffered a serious head injury and called for an attempt-to-murder charge. Police, however, have also indicated that the medical findings would be important in determining whether more serious provisions could be sustained.
Bhardwaj has rejected the allegations as presented by his critics and has said that he acted in self-defence. In his version of events, he claimed that he was surrounded by a group and that his actions were intended to protect himself. The competing accounts underline why the investigation will need to establish what happened during the confrontation through independent evidence rather than relying solely on social media clips or statements from either side.
Reports said Bhardwaj was traced to Bulandshahr after Delhi Police began efforts to locate him. He was initially reported to have attempted to evade the police team, before being detained. He was later formally arrested and produced before a court, which granted police one-day custody.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The arrest and police custody are significant developments, but they should be viewed as part of an investigation rather than as a determination of guilt. Allegations of violence during a public protest deserve serious attention, particularly when questions of physical safety and the use of caste-related legal provisions are involved.
At the same time, Bhardwaj’s claim of self-defence must also be examined fairly, with the evidence, medical records, witness accounts and applicable law determining what ultimately happened and who is responsible. Protests have an important place in a democracy, but they must remain peaceful, while law enforcement must act impartially and transparently regardless of the political or ideological identities of those involved. In an increasingly polarised public space, can we demand accountability without allowing disagreement to turn into hostility, intimidation or violence?
