Chandranath Rath, a close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead and another associate critically injured after unidentified bike-borne attackers ambushed their SUV near Kolkata airport in North 24 Parganas on Wednesday night.
According to police, the assailants reportedly followed the vehicle, intercepted it on a busy stretch, and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene. Rath died on the spot, while the second occupant remains in critical condition at a hospital.
The incident has triggered a high-level police investigation, with officials probing multiple angles including political rivalry, personal enmity, and pre-planned targeted violence. Senior BJP leaders have alleged that the attack was deliberate and politically motivated, while police have so far not confirmed any arrests or a definitive motive.
Kolkata Airport Ambush Security Concerns
Police officials said the attack took place in the Madhyamgram area, close to the highly sensitive Kolkata airport zone, a region typically under heightened surveillance due to its strategic importance. Chandranath Rath, reportedly a former Indian Air Force officer who later became associated with Suvendu Adhikari’s political circle, was travelling in an SUV along with a colleague when the incident occurred.
Investigators believe that the attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, may have been tracking the movement of the vehicle for some time before executing the ambush. Witness accounts suggest that the assailants blocked the SUV’s path and fired multiple rounds in quick succession, leaving little opportunity for escape or defence.
A senior police officer involved in the investigation stated that forensic teams have been deployed to examine the crime scene, including spent cartridges, bullet trajectories, and vehicle damage. CCTV footage from nearby toll plazas, petrol stations, and traffic intersections is being analysed to trace the attackers’ route before and after the incident.
The officer added that “all possible motives, including political rivalry and personal disputes, are being thoroughly examined,” emphasising that it is too early to draw conclusions. Security has been tightened in and around the airport zone following the attack, given its sensitivity and the potential implications of such violence in a high-security corridor.

The killing has quickly escalated into a political flashpoint in West Bengal, with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari strongly condemning the attack and describing it as a “cold-blooded, pre-planned murder.”
He alleged that Rath was under surveillance for at least two to three days prior to the incident, suggesting that the attackers had carefully planned the ambush. According to Adhikari, the nature of the attack indicates targeted violence rather than a spontaneous act, and he has demanded immediate action against those responsible.
