Suvendu Adhikari’s swearing-in as West Bengal’s first BJP chief minister marks a major political transformation after 15 years of TMC governance.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday took oath as the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister of West Bengal since Independence, marking a historic political shift in a state that has largely been governed by regional and Left parties for decades.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several NDA chief ministers and senior BJP leaders from across the country.

Governor RN Ravi administered the oath to Adhikari, whose rise from a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) strategist to the BJP’s most prominent face in Bengal has become one of the defining political stories in the state over the past five years.

The BJP, which secured 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ended the TMC’s 15-year rule led by Mamata Banerjee. While BJP leaders celebrated the result as a mandate for “development and change”, the TMC and opposition parties expressed concerns about increasing political polarisation and the future of Bengal’s social fabric after a deeply contested election.

A Landmark Win For BJP In Bengal

The BJP’s victory in West Bengal is being viewed as one of the party’s most significant electoral breakthroughs in eastern India. Despite having limited political presence in the state a decade ago, the BJP steadily expanded its organisational network and voter base, particularly in districts such as Purba Medinipur, North Bengal and parts of south Bengal.

The Assembly election campaign witnessed intense political rivalry, massive rallies and fierce exchanges between the BJP and TMC leadership. Adhikari, who was unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislature party on Friday evening, took oath alongside a council of ministers that included senior leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik and Kshudiram Tudu.

Addressing supporters after taking oath, Adhikari said his government would work towards “restoring trust in governance” and focus on employment, industrial investment, infrastructure and law and order. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the new chief minister and described the BJP’s victory as a “historic democratic mandate”.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the result reflected the people’s “aspiration for change” and promised that the new government would work towards development “without discrimination”. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya also said the administration would prioritise transparency and governance reforms in sectors including education, healthcare and public administration.

Security arrangements across Kolkata were heightened ahead of the ceremony, with thousands of BJP supporters gathering at Brigade Parade Ground from early morning. Large digital screens and celebratory processions were seen across several districts as party workers hailed the victory as a “new chapter” in Bengal politics.

However, opposition parties criticised what they described as aggressive political campaigning and rising tensions during the election period. TMC leaders said they would function as a “constructive but strong opposition” and continue raising issues concerning federalism, welfare schemes and social harmony in the state.

Suvendu Adhikari’s Political Journey

Suvendu Adhikari’s ascent to the chief minister’s office reflects the dramatic shifts that have taken place in Bengal’s political landscape in recent years. Born into a politically influential family in Purba Medinipur district, Adhikari began his career in the Congress before becoming one of the key architects of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress during its expansion in rural Bengal.

He played a central role in the anti-land acquisition movements in Singur and Nandigram, which significantly contributed to the TMC’s rise to power in 2011 and the decline of the Left Front government.

For years, Adhikari was regarded as one of Banerjee’s closest associates and among the TMC’s strongest grassroots organisers. However, differences within the party and growing tensions over leadership and organisational control eventually led to his exit from the TMC in 2020. Soon after joining the BJP, he became one of the party’s most vocal leaders in Bengal and spearheaded its campaign against the TMC government.

His victory over Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram constituency during the 2021 Assembly election significantly elevated his stature within the BJP. Over the next few years, Adhikari emerged as the party’s central opposition figure in Bengal, leading protests on issues ranging from corruption allegations to law and order concerns. Political observers believe his organisational experience, regional influence and ability to mobilise cadre support played a major role in the BJP’s breakthrough victory this year.

Interestingly, the BJP chose Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, known as “Pochishe Boishakh”, for the oath-taking ceremony. Party leaders projected the timing as culturally symbolic and reflective of Bengal’s literary and cultural heritage. Critics, however, argued that political parties should avoid appropriating cultural icons for electoral messaging.

Opposition Raises Harmony Concerns

While BJP supporters celebrated the formation of the new government, opposition leaders urged the administration to ensure that governance remains inclusive and democratic. TMC leaders acknowledged the electoral verdict but accused the BJP of using divisive rhetoric during the campaign. Senior INDIA bloc leaders also raised concerns about communal tensions and the increasing bitterness witnessed during electioneering.

Political analysts note that Bengal has witnessed intense political rivalries for decades, often accompanied by violence and social divisions at the grassroots level. Several civil society groups and rights organisations have appealed to all political parties to prioritise peace and avoid retaliatory politics following the election results.

Citizens across the state are now closely watching whether the new administration can deliver on its promises while maintaining communal harmony and democratic dialogue.

Economic expectations are also high. Bengal continues to face challenges related to unemployment, industrial stagnation, migration and infrastructure gaps in several regions. The BJP has promised large-scale investment, employment generation and administrative reforms, while critics argue that delivering these promises will require long-term planning and cooperation between the Centre and the state government.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

West Bengal’s change in leadership marks more than just an electoral victory it represents a significant moment in India’s democratic journey. Political transitions in a vibrant and politically aware state like Bengal inevitably carry strong emotions, competing narratives and ideological divides. Yet, beyond party slogans and election rhetoric, citizens ultimately seek dignity, security, opportunity and peaceful coexistence.

The responsibility before the new government is therefore immense. Governance must rise above revenge politics, polarisation and identity-based divisions. Equally, opposition parties must continue to engage constructively and uphold democratic accountability without deepening hostility. Bengal’s rich cultural history has long been shaped by intellectual debate, artistic expression and social reform movements that valued plurality and dialogue.
