I can honestly say that the first two years of my marriage were marvelous. However, after that, when I was expecting my first child, my husband got a job offer from abroad.

Little did I know what future had in store for me. He went and left me to fend for myself for the next five years, visiting me twice on my insistence.

I can still imagine the time when I sat alone with my baby, tearfully hoping and praying that some day he would permanently come back to me or call me. After five years of wait I finally came to know that he had remarried and had no intention of living with me.

He was also involved in a fraud case and was sent to jail. Despite of all this, I still wanted to stay with him because of my child but he never got in touch. He kept me hanging and after getting no response I filed for khula.

I was going through an emotional trauma but stayed strong and got myself a job to fend for me and my child. I am thankful to my supportive parents because of whom I am able to manage work and home life. In few segments of our society divorced women are generally looked down upon.

I want women to know that God only tests his best people and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Through this platform I would like to ask women to stand up against physical or emotional abuse. They should stand up for their rights and stay strong. Keep up the faith.
