Racer Drunk Driving

Vikash Anand, a professional racer who was recently in the news for killing an autorickshaw driver and injuring eight others in Chennai, has been granted bail by the Madras High Court on the condition that he pays Rs 15 lakh as compensation to the victim’s seven-year-old daughter .

Vikash, who won the premier title in the MRF Formula 1600 category rammed into a line of parked auto-rickshaws in the wee hours on September 19. His friend Charankumar who was apparently in the car will pay Rs one lakh to each of the 12 drivers whose vehicles were damaged. Vikash, on the other hand, has to pay a total of Rs. 27.5 lakh as compensation – Rs. 2.5 lakhs to each of the five injured drivers and one lakh each to drivers who suffered minor injuries.

According to a report by the Times of India, a judge of the court said, “Both Vikash and his friend Charan Kumar were under the influence of alcohol, and it has also been proved by the medical report.”

The judge went on to add, “Vikash had driven the car in a rash and negligent manner; hit against the median and dashed against 12 autorickshaws, which had been parked on the left side of the road. Due to the accident, 12 autorickshaws were damaged, one person died, three people sustained grievous injuries and five people sustained simple injuries.

The son of a High Court lawyer, Vikash had earlier claimed that the accident was purely mechanical and that the car was being driven by his driver, not him. After the Session Courts had rejected the bail petition (which stated that the car lost control and to avoid hitting a boulder, they swerved as a result of which their vehicle hit the auto-rickshaws), they moved to the Madras High Court.

Vikash has also claimed that he was not behind the wheel and that the car was being driven by his driver.

This is one more incident which proves ‘kanoon andha hota hain.’ It’s high time the Indian judicial system does a reality check. Nobody is above the law.
