In yet another controversial diktat, Maharashtra govt. today issued a circular stating that from November 1, 2015 fresh Auto-rickshaw permits will only be issued to those who speak regional language of the state- Marathi .However, this won’t be applicable to those who already have the permits for auto rickshaw.
The decision was taken after a survey conducted by Maharashtra govt. found that around 70 percent of auto drivers in the state are non-Maharashtrians.
During Congress-NCP govt. , Marathi was not compulsory to have permits but rule then required than an applicant must be a resident of Maharashtra for at least 15 years.
Any state is run because of hard work put in by every community that includes migrant too. It is skill and dedication that should be of priorities than the regional language.
We are living in a diverse country like India which is multicultural. While it is genuinely desirable on the part of citizens to know the culture of others around them, someone should not be discriminated against for their lack of knowledge about languages and cultures of other groups. India is one country and such divisional attitude will only harm the interests of the country, restricting the work force to one place / state even if they can be gainfully employed in other states / territories.
