After 7 Years, Youth Gets Compensation Of Rs 50 Lakh For Losing A Leg In A Road Accident

Lost his leg and compensated finally

After losing his leg in a road accident seven years ago in 2009, youth gets compensated with over Rs 50 lakh by Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT). The accident involved a truck and the two wheeler. The driver of the truck, the owner and The New India Assurance Company have been directed to jointly pay the compensation to the claimant — Santosh Prabhakar Singeri.

Santosh’s advocate Baldev B Rajput told MACT that Santosh was 13-year-old at the time of the accident. The Ulhasnagar township resident was riding the pillion of a motorbike driven by his father on November 7, 2009. A speeding truck hit them on their way. Santosh fell from the bike and the truck ran over his legs. The injury was so severe that his left leg was amputated. Since the truck driver nor the owner of the truck appeared before MACT, the decision was taken after listening to only one side. The judge opined that the applicant’s oral evidence suggests that the accident happened due to the negligence of the truck driver. The applicant’s disability became a hurdle for him. He will be getting a compensation of Rs 50,18,979. In another judgement, the tribunal awarded Rs 9,69,334 compensation to Santosh’s father S A Singeri, who was also injured in the same accident and had lodged the claim.
