Today, the internet has empowered us to share anything and everything on social media that draw our interests, whether to create awareness, to debate or just to crack a joke. Social media has also become the space which shows how insensitive we are becoming towards other human beings.

Recently, a video showing a woman cashier at a bank, working at a slow pace, went viral. The video was uploaded on Facebook with a sarcastic caption that said “fastest cashier in the world” on October 24 and it has so far drawn over 13 million views and around 1,54,000 shares. It also had over 30,000 derogatory comments.

The fact is that she might be slow and “incompetent” in her working environment. But no one cared to know her story before posting about her or sharing her videos on Facebook.

Kundan Srivastava, a Human Rights activist, came for her defence and revealed her true story. He connected to the Bank of Maharashtra, Pune, where she works and shared her story on Facebook.

She is Premlata Shinde who works in the bank and will retire in February 2017.

She has survived a paralysis stroke once and heart attacks twice. The video was shot when she had just resumed her duties after taking leave for medical treatment.

Premlata has acquired enough leaves to stay at home untill her retirement without having her pay cut. But Premlata has chosen to come to work because she wants to retire while working from the office. Mr Srivastava said on his Facebook wall that the bank knows that she would struggle to do her her work and therefore an additional counter has been set up for her from where she can work at her own pace without causing inconvenience to other customers.

Premlata is a widow and has a son who lives abroad with his family. Her story is definitely an inspiring one and not worth of making jokes as she has chosen to work and make a living for herself despite several impediments.

Why uploading her video and sharing the post was wrong?
1. Publicly shaming someone who has not done any crime is wrong.
2. We live in a society where once you come into limelight for a wrong reason, even after you are proven correct, people keep publicly shaming them.
3. We as the consumers of internet content, must look for another side of the story and also see whether we are being insensitive by publicly mocking someone.
4. Such kind of sharing of posts, might lead to severe consequences. We have read stories of people committing suicide after their post were shared on social media.
5. Many times people are not even aware of posts/videos containing their name being shared on the social media. It comes as a shock to them, which can prove to be fatal.
