Tamil Nadu: For The First Time, Transgenders Are Allowed To Apply In Police Force As Male, Female Or The Third Gender

In a first, Tamil Nadu is set to recruit transgenders in the police force of the state.

In an order issued for the appointment of 13,137 police constables, the state government has said that now transgenders will soon be able to apply for the posts as male, female or third gender.

Those applying under “third gender”category would be considered as female for for educational qualifications, physical fitness and reservation.

The move comes after Prithika Yashini donned the Khaki last year becoming the first trans-woman Sub-Inspector based on a court order.

According to officers, Tamil Nadu would become the first state to induct members of the third gender in its police department. The notification is expected to come in a month and all the recruitments will be completed by December, reported a senior police officer to The Hindu.

Earlier, several members of the third gender had tried to join the police but were turned down because no such special provisions were made for them.
