Son Of A Rickshaw Puller Cracks National Medical Entrance Exam

Sk. Sahajahan Hossain, from Khadianga, Kendrapara, Odisha, whose father gets a pension of Rs 300 per month for a family of eight, cracked the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2017 with an All India Rank (AIR) of 8,642.


Background

Hossain’s father used to work as a rickshaw puller but after the 1999 Odisha super cycle destroyed his home and left the family devastated, he began working in a local Madrassa and earned Rs 2,000 a month. Currently, he makes Rs 300 a month from his pension.

The poor family lives in a katcha house finds it exceedingly difficult make ends meet. But Hossain never gave up dreaming for a better future and his family supported him in goals.

He went to a local Odiya-medium government school and completed his graduation in Physics from Kendrapara Autonomous College.

Hossain went to Bhubaneswar with the ambition of becoming an IAS officer and started living in a slum at Jharpara. To make a living, he gave tuitions to school going students.

He accepted whatever life threw at him and never gave up.

“Strong willpower and proper destination will surely result fruits,” he told MD Imran Ali.


Making NEET a reality

While preparing for competitive examinations, Hossain cracked jobs in Indian Post and Indian Navy but to rather focus more on achieving India Administrative Services.

“In the meanwhile, I thought to appear for NEET because being a doctor also paves a beautiful way to serve the poor of the nation in a great way,” Sahajahan described.

He started taking private coaching classes to study Ayurveda and crack BDS and B. Tech in agriculture. But with continuous hard work, cleared NEET this year with 8,642 AIR. He is now waiting for his counselling to government medical colleges.

However, he is still short of finances to support his education.
