Everybody wants to start off their year on a happy note. While most enjoy by celebrating at some fancy club, there are a few who believe in starting off their year by helping someone. Former captain of the Indian national blind cricket team, Shekhar Naik, is one such person, who welcomes the new year by distributing blankets among the homeless on the streets of Bengaluru.
Celebrating New Year in a perfect way
The 30-year-old Padma Shree awardee, who works as a gym instructor, was joined by his wife, two daughters and his best friend Sagar, as they distributed food packets and blankets on the roads of Kalasipalya-KR market and adjoining areas. The area is a frequent sleeping place for hundreds of labourers. When asked about his reason behind celebrating the New Year in such a way, Naik said that helping the underprivileged is more satisfying for him than partying. “Sharing and caring are the best ways to usher in the New Year. I just wanted to bring a smile to everyone’s face, especially the poor,” Naik told Times of India.
Passing forward the kindness
Shekhar was born blind and it was his mother who helped him get back his eyesight in 1994. He also lost his father at a very young age and after which his mother sent him away to school in Shivamogga. Even after all this, Shekhar always had the habit of keeping others happiness in front of his own. On being asked about his nature of caring for needy so much, he said it was his college warden who inspired him to do good without expectations. “I stayed in a hostel and the warden would gift me a blanket, pair of new clothes and toothbrush once a year,” Naik added.
Looking forward to doing more good
Shekhar says that he is quite satisfied with his life right now. He has a sufficient income to support his family and a best friend who supports him in all his decisions. He has also been training visually impaired students in various schools, two of whom have been chosen for the Nagesh trophy. Shekhar hopes to open a sports academy someday to train those who are passionate about sports and wish to make a career in it.
