Retired Headmistress Donates Land Worth Rs 4 Crore For Construction Of Govt School

Ponmani Devi, an ex-headmistress always wants to do good as long as she lives. She has recently donated an acre of land worth Rs 4 crore to construct government school buildings in Erode district, Tamil Nadu.

K Ponmani Devi, now 80, started her career as a teacher in a government school in Erode in 1964. She has served in the position for 32 years. She retired in 1996 as the headmistress of a government high school in Modachur, Gobichettipalayam, Tamil Nadu.

Ponmani Devi lost her husband in 20 years. After her husband’s death, she moved into the place of her son Mayura Karthikeyan. But she lost her son too when Karthikeyan got electrocuted in 2001 during the construction of his house. She was looked after by her sister Marathal and her sons after the tragedies struck her.

Not the first time

This is not the first time that Ponmani Devi extended her helping hands. When the education department wanted to construct a hostel for boys and girls she donated 25 cents of land. Later in 2015, when the education department took steps to upgrade Chithode government girls school, she had donated Rs 2 lakh. When the authorities were struck by the lack of space to construct the building, she again donated a part of her land.

“After coming to know about this, I decided to donate one acre of land to the school to construct additional buildings for class 12 students,” she told The Times of India. She has transferred all the documents to the district collector. The classes will start this academic year and the school will organise a function in collaboration with the district administration to facilitate Ponmani Devi.
