Like many others who go to Kerala in search of work, Mudad Revathi, also travelled to the southern state from Odisha, a little over a year ago. While the local language, Malayalam, is considered to be a tough language for many to learn, Revathi not only mastered it but also aced the special examination conducted by the state-run Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority.
Odisha labourer aces literacy test
Reportedly, she scored 100 marks in a literacy test which was activity-oriented, giving special emphasis on reading, writing, and arithmetical skills. Mudad works at a garment-making unit at the IT hub Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Besides her, Viki Kumar, a migrant labourer from Bihar also scored a 100% in the literacy test, which is conducted by Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority.
Reportedly, the results were announced on Monday, December 10 in which, a number of migrant labourers appeared. Revathi could only learn Malayalam so fast was because of her hard work. She told India Today, “I tried to spend at least two hours to learn Malayalam every night after my work.” The Kerala State Literacy Mission runs the ‘Changathi’ programme which imparts Malayalam and basic education to migrant labourers.
Under “Aksharasagaram”, Kerala’s flagship programme aimed at eradicating illiteracy among the fishermen’s community. 90-year-old Mythili, a native of Kozhikode, also scored a 100% in the examination.
Recently, Kerala’s Karthyayani Amma received a merit certificate from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for scoring 2% more marks than her own age. Karthyayani Amma showed the world that if you have a strong desire to learn, you most certainly can score 98 out of 100 marks in ‘Aksharalaksham’ literacy programme.

These stories only reinforce the fact that nothing can pose an obstacle if one is determined to attain a goal. Also, the role of Kerala government and the grassroots literacy crews should be appreciated. Their programme is giving wings to the dreams of many people, who, for various circumstances could not pursue education.
