A residential complex in Navi Mumbai, Shah Complex IV, has recently installed three solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations within its premises. This is in addition to the already existing rooftop solar power plant that the society possesses.
The installation was accomplished by Magenta Power, a Mumbai based firm which is involved in installing renewable energy solutions and electric vehicle mobility infrastructure. This initiative will help diminish 492 tons of Carbon dioxide which is equivalent to planting 787 Teak trees.
This is the first such project in Maharashtra and among the first ones in India, confirmed the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, reported the Hindustan Times.
The idea of setting up a solar electric vehicle (EV) charging station came up when they were installing the 16 kW solar plant in February. The setting up of both the solar plant and the solar EV charging stations have brought down their common electricity bill to zero from an average bill of Rs 25,000.
“As a responsible society, we decided to go solar to leave behind liveable earth for our children. The fact that we are getting zero bills now is a bonus. Realising that the future is about electric vehicles, we decided to install the solar plant,” said the Secretary of Shah Complex IV, Venkateswaran.
Each of the three charging stations has a capacity of 3.3 kW. Residents can use this to charge their vehicles overnight as it does not possess the fill-as-you-go quick one-hour charging facility.
Solar power is a free source of renewable energy and it does not cause pollution. It reduces carbon emissions to a very large extent. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, are cheaper and do not emits the toxic gases which a petrol and diesel vehicle does.
This move from a small residential complex will help other residential apartments in the city to adopt cleaner energy. The move is also in accordance with the government proposed plan to replace all fossil fuel-run two-wheelers by electric one till 2025. A shift from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric will help reduce pollution.
