A Bus Full Of Kids From Shelter Home Were Invited To Join The Celebrations At A Wedding

A bus full of chirpy and excited kids descended on the venue of Jahnvi Maini’s wedding. The children from a Feeding India shelter school were invited to celebrate the big day with Jahnvi and her groom. Rohini Maini, sister of the soon to be bride, was the driving force behind, what was more than just a simple wedding in the NCR. She was eager to get in touch with Feeding India right from the get go.

As the kids made their way through the gigantic doors, they seemed both surprised and extremely pleased with the warmth with which they were greeted and welcomed. “Hamein bilkul baarati jaisa mehsoos hua,” said Jagdish, a 9 year old at studying at Feeding India supported remedial school. At no point throughout the celebration did the children feel disengaged or unwanted. The family, friends of the bride groom, other wedding guests and Feeding India hunger heroes, all made it a point to engage with the children and make the wedding a cherished memory for them. As soon as the DJ cued music, the children stood up to dance. They even, successfully, convinced a few of the wedding guests to test their moves on the dance floor.

“Usually we guests at weddings are people who have plenty in their lives, but the real celebration was with these kids as they were so happy looking at even small things like the food or decorations” said the mother of the bride. The children danced and ate to their heart’s content.”The Daal Makhni was my absolute favourite”, recounts 8 years old Anu.

The children study at a Feeding India supported remedial school in Gurgaon. They come from nearby slum areas whose parents and families are from the neighboring states. Due to difficulties, the children cannot get admission into government schools and thus have no other alternative to education. There is little or no motivation for the parents to send the kids to school as they would rather send them to labor sites and garbage dumps to work. Feeding India has successfully helped encourage the parents there to send their children to a nearby small-scale schools and then give them food as a motivation.
