The TCS World 10K run that will be organised in Bengaluru this Sunday May 15, will witness an indomitable fighting spirit hitting the roads of the city for a run of her lifetime and her name is Shalini Saraswathi, a quadruple amputee.

37-year-old Shalini lost all her limbs fighting against a rare bacterial infection, which led to multiple-organ failure. She continued to fight for life even after losing her unborn baby. She hopes to inspire a million of differently abled people by participating in the Open 10K category.

Shalini, deputy general manager with Firstsource Solutions, is planning to participate in the event with the aid of carbon-fibre running blades loaned from a German company called Ottobock. However, she still has not been able to find a replacement for her hands, amputated three years ago.

Shalini was leading a good life in Cambodia. She returned from there after her fourth marriage anniversary, while she was pregnant. But after coming back, she was caught with mild fever that eventually changed her course of life. Initially, the doctors thought it was dengue, but later they found her Rickettsial with morts, a disease that affects one in a million. She had five per cent of survival chance and in this process she lost her baby.

Shalini, who was a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, struggled a lot to accept her condition, but she was struck by gangrene that led her to amputation. Her left hand was amputated in March 2013 and after a few months her right hand fell on its own after decaying.

This was just the beginning. With time, her legs were also affected by gangrene and they also had to be amputated. She tells Time of India, that she couldn’t have carried her fight without the support of the people around her.

Shalini’s coach Aiyappa told Times of India that he hope Shalini will be able to complete the 10K run on Sunday in around 90 minutes.

The Logical Indian salutes Shalini for her indomitable courage and endeavour to battle out all the odds. We hope her story will be able to inspire a lot of people and will give them a ray of hope. We wish Shalini all the best for her future.
