Ketan Mehta’s movie “Manjhi – The Mountain Man” is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. It is based on the inspiring story of Dashrath Manjhi, who worked for 22 years and single-handedly hammered his way through the Gehlour hills in Bihar so that the people in his village could avail better medical facilities. He reduced the distance traveled from 55 km to 15 km. The film stars in the movie are beloved actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte.

Unfortunately, the film was leaked on the internet 10 days before the actual release date. While movie leaks are becoming a frequent affair, it’s all the more frustrating in this case because it is a movie about a local hero, a rare instance when Bollywood decided to do a biographical film about the common man.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui commented on the film leak saying, “All I can say is that, a story and a film like this cannot be watched on a small laptop. A story where there is a mountain and a person is standing in front of it, the depth of such a visual can’t be seen on a small laptop screen. So it’s my sincere request to people who have already seen the film that they come to the theatres to watch it again … All I want to say is that we have made the film with a lot of passion and now we only hope is that the film reaches the audience.”

Mainstream and print media increased the damage caused to the movie by featuring headlines on the film leak, spreading the news far and wide. We at The Logical Indian are not that qualified when it comes to Journalism, but even then our ethics and common sense say that highlighting the leak was a step forward in increasing the damage to the movie. We can never understand what kind of journalism allows that.

Let’s be frank here. Almost all of us find it cheaper and easier to download a movie from the net and watch it in the comforts of our own homes. Torrents are the primary source of entertainment for a majority of us, particularly when most recently released (and yet-to-be-released) movies, TV shows and albums are already available to us.

But what about the people who worked hard for the movie or music to become reality? What about the songwriters who spent days on end struggling to find the right words and strike the right chords? What about the filmmakers who dedicated months of their lives so that every scene in their movie would be as perfect as it could be? What about the producers who now have to face a dip in profits because many viewers downloaded their film free of cost?

Many still go to theatres and watch the movie, but profits will nevertheless decrease.

In conclusion, the Logical Indian community appeals to the public to be responsible citizens by being responsible consumers of entertainment. This week, instead of watching “Manjhi – The Mountain Man” on our laptops or mobiles, let’s go the theatres and give the credit the filmmakers and actors deserve. If we’ve already watched the downloaded movie, let’s make amends by going to the nearest theatre and watching the movie again. And let’s continue this for every movie we want to see, every book we want to read, and every song we want to listen to. This is not about giving publicity to one movie – it’s about rewarding actors, singers, writers and artists for their hard work.
