From Daily-Wage Workers’ Daughter To District Head: IAS Sreedhanya Suresh Becomes Kerala’s First Tribal Woman Collector

From a modest Kurichya tribal settlement in Wayanad and a four-kilometre walk to school, Sreedhanya Suresh has risen to become Kerala’s first tribal woman district collector.

IAS officer Sreedhanya Suresh took charge as Kasaragod District Collector on September 16, becoming Kerala’s first tribal woman to head a district. The 2019-batch officer belongs to the Kurichya community and grew up in a tribal settlement in Wayanad’s Pozhuthana panchayat. She cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2018 with an All India Rank of 410.

After taking charge, Sreedhanya said Kasaragod has considerable potential in tourism, agriculture and industry and sought the cooperation of residents, government departments and the media in addressing the district’s challenges and pursuing development.

Humble Beginnings

Sreedhanya’s journey to the civil services began in a modest tribal settlement in Wayanad. She belongs to the Kurichya Scheduled Tribe community and was raised by parents who depended on daily-wage work. Her father, Suresh, worked as a daily-wage labourer, while her mother, Kamala, worked under the rural employment scheme.

She studied in Malayalam-medium government schools before pursuing zoology at St Joseph’s College, Devagiri, Kozhikode, followed by postgraduate studies at the University of Calicut. Her educational journey eventually led her to the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which she cleared in 2018 with AIR 410.

The IAS Journey

Before entering the civil services, Sreedhanya worked with the Scheduled Tribes Development Department in Wayanad. An interaction with then-Mananthavady Sub-Collector Sriram Sambasiva Rao reportedly influenced her decision to pursue the civil services. After clearing the examination, she joined the Kerala cadre as a 2019-batch IAS officer.

She subsequently served as Assistant Collector in Kozhikode and Sub-Collector in Perinthalmanna. Her career also included responsibilities in the Registration Department and a tenure as Commissioner of Food Safety, giving her experience across district administration and regulatory work.

Past Work

Her appointment as Kasaragod Collector follows several administrative assignments, including her recent tenure as Commissioner of Food Safety. The posting came as part of a wider Kerala government reshuffle. Outgoing Collector Arjun Pandian was transferred as Director of the Agriculture Development and Farmers Welfare Department, with additional responsibilities. Sreedhanya now takes charge of Kasaragod at a time when the district is looking at opportunities across tourism, agriculture and industry.

New Role Ahead

After assuming office, Sreedhanya highlighted tourism as an area with significant potential in Kasaragod, while also pointing to agriculture, agro-based activities and industry. She said the district’s geographical location and availability of government land could support development initiatives.

She also said she would examine the proposal for an AIIMS in Kasaragod in consultation with the state government and relevant officials. Her immediate focus, she indicated, would involve understanding local challenges and working with government departments and residents to take forward feasible projects.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Sreedhanya Suresh’s appointment is significant not only because of the milestone it represents, but also because of the visibility it brings to communities that remain underrepresented in senior public institutions. Her journey highlights how education, opportunity and access to public services can help people from modest backgrounds enter positions of responsibility.

Representation, however, is meaningful when it creates wider pathways for others to participate and lead. As Sreedhanya begins her tenure in Kasaragod, how can institutions create more opportunities for young people from historically underrepresented communities to enter public service and shape society?
