A very few people know that in Canada, 28 Indians are breaking sweat to make us proud at an international sports event. Indian athletes have bagged multiple medals this year in Commonwealth Powerlifting and Bench Press Championship, that began from September 15 in Canada.

Among all wins, the most heartwarming is that of a 16-year-old girl – Rishitaa Jain. Rishitaa who hails from Karol Bagh area in Delhi, was the youngest of the Indian to participate in the competition. She, in her debut international competition, won four gold medals at the sub junior level (52 kg) main event.

Speaking to The Logical Indian, Rishitaa’s mother Shweta Jain said, “It makes us extremely proud and happy that our daughter has won gold at an international event and has brought laurels to India.”

Class eleven student, Rishitaa had only joined the gym two years back. “Few months after she joined the gym, the trainer told us she should start lifting weights and take part in competition,” added Shweta. Thus began her journey of powerlifting. She started with zonal level competition, then state, national, and is now representing the country.

It is saddening that in a cricket dominating nation, news of such importance and pride goes under-reported. “Not even a single Indian media channel has covered the event. It is difficult to bring a medal in a male dominated sport. Acknowledging the winners keeps them motivated and charged up,” mentioned Shweta.

Rishitaa will be returning to India on September 24.

Chennai based powerlifter Arthi Arun won five gold medals in the 72 kg category in the competition. She is also the current Asian Powerlifting Gold Medalist and National Champion.

From Assam, Dr. Anindita Priyadarshini Das, managed to bag four gold medals in the recently concluded event.

The achievement in the Commonwealth Championships is known to be the gateway to World Powerlifting Championship.

Every athletic win is significant and The Logical Indian will continue to cover every such winning story that does not find a spot in conventional media.
