A Historic Achievement

Shams Aalam, hailing from Madhubani, Bihar, became the first paraplegic swimmer to complete a 13 km distance. Competing against 50 participants, he finished 32nd overall, a remarkable achievement given his circumstances.

Despite facing dehydration issues due to a delayed start, Aalam expressed joy in his performance, stating, “I pushed through the challenges because I wanted to inspire others.” His previous successes at shorter distances and his recent triumph at the 24th National Para Swimming Championship, where he won multiple medals, laid the groundwork for this record-setting swim.

The Challenge of Open-Water Swimming

Open-water swimming presents unique challenges, including unpredictable weather conditions and varying water temperatures. For athletes like Aalam, these factors can be even more daunting. He trained rigorously for months leading up to this event, focusing not only on endurance but also on mental resilience. Aalam noted that swimming in open water differs significantly from pool swimming, as natural currents can aid or hinder progress.

Background and Support

Aalam’s inspiring journey began after a tragic accident at age 24 left him paraplegic. Instead of succumbing to despair, he embraced swimming as a means of rehabilitation and empowerment. His determination has garnered support from various stakeholders, including Mr. Sony Thomas, who emphasized equal opportunities for athletes with disabilities. The Bihar Swimming Association highlighted the importance of inclusive events that allow all athletes to compete on an equal footing.
