Nidhi Shines as India Triumphs Over China in Thrilling Finale to Win Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2024

India's women's hockey team showcased remarkable resilience, defeating China 3-2 in a penalty shootout to secure their second consecutive Junior Asia Cup title.

India successfully defended their title at the Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2024, defeating China 3-2 in a thrilling penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The final took place on December 15, 2024, at the Hockey Oman Stadium in Muscat, Oman. Indian goalkeeper Nidhi was instrumental, making three crucial saves during the shootout. This victory marks India’s second consecutive championship in this tournament, further establishing their dominance in women’s junior hockey.

A Nail-Biting Finale 

The final match showcased intense competition between India and China. China initially took the lead with a goal from Jinzhuang Tan just before halftime. However, India equalised in the third quarter through Kanika Siwach, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. With both teams unable to break the deadlock in the final quarter, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout. Nidhi’s standout performance included saving critical shots from Chinese players Wang Li Hang and Jingyi Li, while Indian scorers Sakshi Rana, Ishika, and Sunelita Toppo secured the win for India by converting their attempts.

Celebrating Excellence and Resilience 

Following their victory, Hockey India announced a reward of ₹2 lakh for each player and ₹1 lakh for support staff as recognition of their hard work and dedication. Coach Baljeet Singh commended his team’s mental fortitude and tactical execution throughout the tournament. Deepika Sehrawat emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with 12 goals, further highlighting India’s offensive prowess. This win not only solidifies India’s reputation in women’s hockey but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes across the nation.

This championship marks India’s second consecutive title at the Women’s Junior Asia Cup, having previously won in 2023 against South Korea.
