Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng, a commentator for Dagsavisen, had her Facebook and Instagram accounts suspended by Meta on May 19, 2026. This deplatforming followed intense online backlash after she called out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his diplomatic visit to Oslo, asking why he would not take questions from the “world’s freest press.”
While opposition leaders in India used the viral incident to criticise the Prime Minister’s media accessibility, India’s Ministry of External Affairs and ruling party representatives firmly defended their democratic framework, dismissing the disruption as a breach of diplomatic protocol. Lyng, who faced internet trolling and unsubstantiated allegations of being a “foreign spy,” viewed the suspensions as a “small price to pay for press freedom” and has requested a manual review from Meta to restore her accounts.
The Oslo Incident: An Unscripted Disruption
The controversy unfolded at the conclusion of a joint media appearance between PM Modi and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Oslo. As both leaders were exiting the stage, Lyng shouted her question across the room. The moment was captured on video and widely shared on social media by Lyng herself, who highlighted that Norway ranks first on the World Press Freedom Index, while India sits at 157th. She later noted that while she did not expect an answer, questioning leaders is fundamental to public-interest journalism.
The MEA Press Briefing Counter-Response
In a rapid public relations move, the Indian Embassy in Norway tagged Lyng on X and invited her to an official Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) briefing at the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel in Oslo later that evening. Lyng attended and directly questioned Indian officials regarding human rights and press accessibility.
The exchange turned tense as MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George vigorously defended India’s institutional structure:
- Constitutional Rights: George emphasised that India’s democratic and legal framework guarantees absolute protection and equality to all its citizens.
- Massive Media Landscape: He pointed out the sheer scale of the Indian media environment, noting that Delhi alone hosts around 200 independent television channels operating across multiple languages.
- Critique of Extraneous Metrics: The Indian delegation criticised global rankings for relying heavily on “ignorant NGOs” that fail to understand the immense complexity and scale of a nation representing one-sixth of humanity.
Algorithmic Fallout and Domestic Political Warfare
Following the viral interaction, Lyng’s digital visibility expanded dramatically, with her X follower count scaling up from fewer than 800 to tens of thousands within days. However, this sudden visibility triggered aggressive online counter-campaigns. Old articles she had written regarding Chinese geopolitics were publicised by pro-government handles, leading to online accusations that she was a “foreign plant” or “spy”—allegations Lyng firmly rejected as baseless.
By May 19, Meta’s automated moderation systems deactivated her Instagram and Facebook profiles, a common occurrence when a personal account experiences a sudden influx of mass reporting or highly unusual traffic spikes.
Back in India, the event became immediate political ammunition. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the Prime Minister’s reluctance to face unscripted public questions, stating that it impacted India’s international image. In response, BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya dismissed the controversy, calling Lyng’s interjection an “incoherent rant” and pointing out that neither prime minister was scheduled to take questions during the routine joint briefing
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The confrontation in Oslo highlights a deep, systemic friction between differing global journalistic traditions and diplomatic norms. While standard state protocol must be respected to maintain international decorum, the core function of journalism has always been to seek transparency and pose difficult questions to those in power.
True democracy is not fragile; it thrives on open dialogue, accountability, and a willingness to engage with critique. The rapid escalation of this event into online toxicity, personal vilification, and the automated silencing of a journalist’s social communication channels sets a concerning precedent.
Resorting to cyber-bullying and branding international reporters as adversarial agents damages the collective pursuit of mutual respect and global understanding. We believe that true strength lies in welcoming scrutiny with grace, patience, and transparent engagement, rather than allowing algorithms and online hostility to dictate the terms of public discourse.

Throughout all day I have struggled to log onto my Instagram account. Now I have been suspended. It is a small prize to pay for press freedom, but I’ve never experienced it before. pic.twitter.com/XCitS65Rlg
