‘Silenced, Not Defeated’: Raghav Chadha Reacts After AAP Replaces Him As Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader

AAP replaces Raghav Chadha with Ashok Mittal; Opposition alleges rift, party calls reshuffle.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has replaced its Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha as deputy leader in the Upper House with fellow MP Ashok Mittal, triggering sharp reactions from Opposition parties and sparking debate about possible internal differences within the party.

The decision, formally communicated to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, also reportedly means Chadha will no longer receive speaking time from AAP’s parliamentary quota. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress have linked the move to an alleged rift between Chadha and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, while AAP leaders insist the change is a routine organisational reshuffle aimed at giving different leaders opportunities in Parliament.

In his first public reaction, Chadha shared a video message stating he felt “silenced, not defeated”, raising questions about whether he had done anything wrong while reaffirming his commitment to public issues.

Opposition Claims Internal Rift In AAP

The development has intensified political debate, with Opposition leaders questioning AAP’s internal functioning and democratic practices. BJP leader Ramvir Singh Bidhuri criticised the decision, saying Chadha had been an articulate speaker during their time in the Delhi Assembly and suggesting that preventing a senior MP from speaking reflects poorly on democratic values.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva alleged that the change indicates growing differences between Chadha and Kejriwal, claiming the MP has distanced himself from what he described as the party leadership’s style of functioning. Sachdeva further argued that Chadha may be the second prominent AAP leader, after Swati Maliwal, to appear at odds with the leadership.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Mallu Ravi also expressed concern, stating that while disagreements within parties are natural, sidelining leaders could undermine democratic norms. Some Opposition leaders have also pointed to Chadha’s absence from recent party events and political activities as a possible indication of underlying tensions within the party.

AAP Calls It Routine Reshuffle

AAP leaders, however, have dismissed allegations of internal discord and described the decision as a normal organisational change. Rajya Sabha Leader of the House Sanjay Singh confirmed that the party had formally informed the Rajya Sabha Secretariat about the leadership change.

Newly appointed deputy leader Ashok Mittal sought to play down speculation of a rift, stating that Chadha remains a senior leader in the party and that such transitions are part of a democratic structure where different MPs are given the chance to raise issues in Parliament. Mittal added that the change would help the party focus more effectively on concerns affecting Punjab, particularly with Assembly elections in the state expected in the near future.

Political observers note that the move comes at a time when AAP is recalibrating its parliamentary strategy and leadership roles. The party currently has 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha seven from Punjab and three from Delhi and is expected to highlight state-specific issues more prominently in Parliament.

Chadha, once seen as one of the party’s most prominent young faces and a key strategist during AAP’s expansion in Punjab, has reportedly been less visible in party campaigns and organisational activities in recent months, which has fuelled speculation about shifting internal dynamics.

Chadha’s Response and Earlier Political Context

Shortly after being replaced, Chadha posted a video montage on social media highlighting several issues he had raised in Parliament, including concerns about the tax burden on the middle class, data expiry rules, paternity leave rights and airline baggage charges. In a brief message accompanying the video, he said he felt “silenced, not defeated” and asked whether he had done anything wrong, marking his first public reaction to the party’s decision.

The development has also revived discussion about Chadha’s role within the party over the past two years. During the controversy surrounding the Delhi excise policy case in 2024, Chadha was in London for eye surgery when Kejriwal was arrested, a period during which his relative absence from domestic political activity drew public attention. Although Chadha later clarified that he was abroad for medical reasons, some critics and political rivals have continued to point to that episode while speculating about the current developments.

Despite the controversy, Chadha remains a sitting Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab and continues to be regarded as one of the younger national-level leaders associated with AAP. Whether the leadership change reflects a broader strategic recalibration or deeper internal tensions remains uncertain, but the development has clearly intensified political scrutiny of the party’s internal dynamics and parliamentary strategy.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Leadership reshuffles are a routine feature of democratic politics, yet the way they are communicated and interpreted can significantly shape public trust. In an era where citizens increasingly expect transparency from political institutions, clarity around internal decisions becomes essential to prevent speculation and polarisation.

At the same time, robust internal debate is often a sign of a healthy political culture provided it is handled with openness and mutual respect. For political parties across the spectrum, the challenge lies in balancing organisational discipline with space for diverse voices and constructive dissent.
