At least two people have died, while one injured person was rescued after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar on Thursday morning, November 5. Several others are feared trapped beneath the debris, officials said. The incident was reported at around 9.50 am from Gali Sitara, near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station.
Following the collapse, at least six fire units, including water tenders and rescue vehicles, were rushed to the spot to carry out search and rescue operations. Senior fire department officials are supervising the operation as teams continue efforts to locate and rescue those feared trapped. The cause of the collapse and the exact number of people still trapped remain unknown, with further details awaited.
Rescue Operations Underway
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the building collapsed during the morning hours, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. The structure, which was reportedly under construction, came down in the narrow lanes of Gali Sitara, a busy locality in the Chawri Bazaar area of Old Delhi.
Officials said several people were feared trapped under the rubble, raising concerns about the possibility of casualties. At least six fire units, including water tenders and specialised rescue vehicles, were rushed to the location to assist with the operation. Senior officers were also present at the site to supervise the emergency response and coordinate the efforts of the teams involved.
The immediate priority for the responding agencies was to search through the debris and determine whether anyone remained trapped inside the collapsed structure. However, the exact number of people who may have been present in the building when it collapsed had not been officially established in the initial reports.
As the operation progressed, further information regarding the condition of those feared trapped, possible injuries and the extent of the structural damage was awaited. Authorities had not released a detailed statement identifying the building’s occupants or confirming the circumstances that led to the collapse.
Safety Concerns Resurface
The incident has once again brought attention to building safety and construction practices in densely populated parts of Delhi, where narrow streets and closely packed structures can make emergency response operations particularly challenging.
Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar is a busy commercial neighbourhood known for its crowded lanes, markets and older buildings. The presence of ongoing construction activity in such localities makes adherence to structural safety requirements, construction permissions and precautionary measures particularly important. Any structural failure in these areas can potentially put not only construction workers and occupants but also people in neighbouring properties at risk.
The Chawri Bazaar incident also comes amid a series of building collapse incidents reported in the national capital in recent months. On September 6, a multi-storey building collapsed in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, killing seven people and injuring several others. The structure, which housed a paying guest accommodation, reportedly collapsed while renovation work was underway.
Another building collapse was reported in northeast Delhi’s Seemapuri area on October 7, claiming three lives, including those of two children, while several people were rescued from the debris. These incidents have renewed concerns about structural stability, construction-related risks and the need for effective monitoring of buildings across the city.
While the circumstances surrounding the Chawri Bazaar collapse are yet to be established, a detailed assessment will be necessary to determine whether construction-related lapses, structural weaknesses or other factors contributed to the incident. No official conclusion regarding the cause had been announced at the time of reporting.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Building collapses are not merely structural failures; they can have devastating consequences for workers, residents, families and entire neighbourhoods. While the immediate priority in Chawri Bazaar must remain the safe rescue of anyone trapped under the debris, the incident also highlights the importance of stronger accountability and preventive measures.
Construction safety standards, regular structural inspections and effective enforcement of building regulations must not be treated as formalities. Authorities must ensure that construction activities follow prescribed safety requirements, particularly in densely populated neighbourhoods where one building’s failure can endanger many others.
Any negligence, if established through an investigation, must invite appropriate accountability. At the same time, rescue workers deserve public cooperation and unhindered access to carry out their duties. How can authorities and civic bodies strengthen building safety measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring in our cities?
