The controversy surrounding Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, former head of Sri Sharada Institute of Indian Management in New Delhi’s Vasant Kunj, has escalated after 17 women students came forward accusing him of sexual harassment. These students, mostly enrolled under Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) scholarships, reported repeated instances of abuse including obscene WhatsApp messages, inappropriate physical contact, and verbal harassment.

The Delhi Police have recorded the statements of 32 students, substantiating the pattern of misconduct. Investigators have also uncovered pressure exerted by some faculty and administrative staff on students to comply with Saraswati’s demands and to silence complaints.

The police, despite several raids and recovering digital evidence such as CCTV footage and mobile phones, continue their search for Saraswati who has been absconding for over a month. His last confirmed location was Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Background and Pattern of Misconduct

Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, also known as Parthasarthy, originally hails from Odisha and has been a self-styled godman managing the institute for 12 years. This is not his first encounter with the law: there are earlier molestation cases registered against him in 2009 and 2016, which highlight a disturbing history of abuse and evasion of accountability.

Over the years, he reportedly amassed enough influence and resources to fake UN diplomatic number plates on a luxury Volvo car found at the institute’s basement, adding complexity to the investigation. Police investigations are ongoing regarding possible accomplices, including certain female wardens who allegedly assisted Saraswati in coercing students.

The Sri Sri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Mahasamsthanam Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham, overseeing the institute, has officially distanced itself from Saraswati, labelling his actions illegal and inappropriate. Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati holds an MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and several postdoctoral degrees.

A recognized author and professor, he has published extensively on Indian wisdom and leadership. Despite his academic stature, his controversial past with multiple molestation complaints undermines his credibility..

Institutional Failures and Student Safety Concerns

The case has raised serious questions about institutional oversight and the safety of students, particularly those from vulnerable socio-economic backgrounds. Several victims reported intimidation tactics, including threats of poor academic marks to force compliance.

The alleged involvement of faculty and administrative staff in bullying and silencing victims reveals systemic issues within the institution. Police have indicted Saraswati under multiple sections related to sexual harassment and forgery and have seized key evidence to strengthen the case.

Meanwhile, the management institute now operates under a Governing Council to protect students and ensure academic continuity amidst the turmoil.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This case underscores the grave dangers that arise when positions of authority in educational and spiritual establishments are misused to exploit trust and power. The Logical Indian firmly believes that creating safe learning environments, fostering transparency, and enforcing accountability are essential to protecting students.

Healing and justice rest on amplifying survivor voices and institutional reforms that prioritise dignity and safety over reputation. It is crucial for communities and institutions to develop robust mechanisms that empower victims to come forward without fear, ensuring no abuse goes unchecked.
