Soon, Water Breaks In Karnataka Schools To Keep Students Hydrated

Following in Kerala’s footsteps, the Karnataka government is planning to introduce water bells in schools to ensure that students drink adequate water.

“The bell will be sounded three to four times a day so that they drink sufficient water when they are in school. Many children end up not drinking water at all while in school,” S. Suresh Kumar, Primary and Secondary Education Minister, was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Kumar added that he has instructed the Education Commissioner to set up a programme to implement the system in schools in the state.

The water bell initiative first began in Kerala schools, where a special interval is now provided for students to drink water. The initiative began to prevent health issues in children stemming from dehydration. The bell rings twice or thrice in the day, during which it is mandatory for the students to drink water.

Meanwhile, a private school in Uppinagady, in Karnataka, has already implemented the system in the school.

“In the recent years, we have come across an increase in the number of students suffering from health related issues including kidney stones. Students are in the habit of carrying water bottles from their homes, but instead of drinking water, they tend to take it back home as it is or end up sipping very little water during the day,” Jose M J, principal of Indraprastha Vidyalaya, was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“This has resulted in a rise in headaches, dehydration and other health issues among students. The issue was raised during a recent meeting and discussed in detail among staff members which led to the launch of water bell or special intervals to make students drink water,” she added.

In the school, the water bell rings thrice a day at 10.35 am, 12 pm and 2 pm and teachers in the classroom and council of ministers ensure that the students drink water during the interval.
