In a major blow to international drug syndicates, Salim Ismail Dola, a 60-year-old alleged close associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was detained by Turkish authorities in Istanbul on April 25, 2026. Dola, a key figure in a transnational narcotics network worth an estimated ₹5,000 crore, had been evading Indian agencies for nearly a decade.
He was tracked down in the Beylikdüzü district by the National Intelligence Organisation of Türkiye while living under a forged UAE identity. Indian agencies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Mumbai Police, have confirmed the detention and are now initiating extradition proceedings through Interpol to bring him back to India to face trial for multiple drug-related offences
Dismantling the Synthetic Drug Empire
The arrest follows months of coordinated surveillance between Indian and Turkish intelligence. Dola is allegedly the mastermind behind a massive Mephedrone (MD) manufacturing and distribution ring that supplied synthetic drugs across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.
“Dola’s arrest severs a key node in organised crime and signals that long-time fugitives are increasingly within reach,” stated a senior official from the Mumbai Police. Investigations suggest the syndicate used front companies and cargo shipments to smuggle drugs, often laundering the proceeds through hawala networks into real estate.
The breakthrough came after the 2024 bust of a clandestine lab in Sangli and the subsequent deportation of Dola’s son, Taher Dola, from the UAE last year, which provided critical intelligence to the NCB.
A Decades-Long Trail of Crime
Salim Dola’s criminal history dates back to 1998 when he was first intercepted at Mumbai’s Sahar Airport attempting to smuggle 40 kg of Mandrax tablets. Over the years, he graduated from small-scale smuggling to becoming a pivotal figure in Dawood Ibrahim’s ‘D-Company,’ focusing on the high-profit synthetic drug trade.
He fled India around 2015-16 after his name surfaced in a ₹1,000-crore Fentanyl seizure in Mumbai. Despite the lack of a direct extradition treaty between India and Türkiye, officials expressed optimism that international cooperation under the Interpol Red Corner Notice would lead to his swift return. His detention is seen as the final piece in a puzzle that has seen over a dozen of his associates arrested since 2024
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that the dismantling of such vast narcotics networks is a victory for public safety and the health of our youth. While the arrest of a high-profile fugitive brings a sense of justice, it also serves as a reminder of the urgent need for global cooperation in tackling the drug menace that fuels violence and destabilises communities.
We must continue to push for a society where the rule of law prevails over the shadows of the underworld. True progress lies not just in catching the “kingpins,” but in fostering a culture of empathy and education that prevents our citizens from falling into the trap of addiction and crime.
