Know About The India's First Indigenous Color Movie

Kisan Kanya was the first indigenously made colour film. It was released in 1937, directed by Moti B Gidwani and produced by Ardeshit Irani. The film was based on a novel penned by the famed writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Saadat Hasan Manto is an Indo-Pakistani writer who had penned many short stories, novels, radio plays, and essays. Most of his writings chronicled the sad narratives of the partition of India in 1947. His writings reflected the socio-political fabric of the time.

The movie as mentioned earlier is based on Saadat Hasan Manto’s writing which revolves around the plight of farmers. The beautifully captures how landlords ill-treat peasants and farmers. Farmers distress has been a long-standing issue in India, a country which has gone through multiple famines and droughts. The farmer’s issue, the issues they face is relevant till date. ‘Kisan Kanya’ despite fairing average in the box office, remains a path-breaking movie for its leap in technology and how it set the trend for various innovations in the cine industry.

The film starred Padmadevi, Jillo, Ghulam Mohammed,Nissar, Syed Ahmed & Ghani. It is worthwhile noting that Sairandhri was a movie in 1933 that was made in color but processed and printed in Germany.
