Whistle Blower Sanjiv Chaturvedi and founder of NGO ‘Goonj’ Anshu Gupta, have been chosen for the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for the year 2015.

Senior bureaucrat Sanjiv Chaturvedi initiated action in around 200 corruption cases during his stint as AIIMS CVO. He blew whistle on scams in Haryana and at AIIMS, was removed from his post of Chief Vigilance Officer. He dedicated his award to Sardar Patel.

The foundation said Chaturvedi was being recognized for “his exemplary integrity, courage and tenacity in uncompromisingly exposing and painstakingly investigating corruption in public office, and his resolute crafting programmes and system improvements to ensure that government honourably serves the people of India” as reported by IBNLive.

Anshu Gupta started Goonj and left his job to help the poor by converting donated cloth and other household products into usable resources.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award established to perpetuate former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay’s example of integrity in governance, courageous service to the people, and pragmatic idealism within a democratic society. The Ramon Magsaysay Award is often considered to be an Asian equivalent to the Nobel Prize.

The award ceremony will be held on August 31st, 2015. It is indeed a proud moment for the country.
