Anjali Singh, 28, was arrested in Ajmer, Rajasthan, for allegedly killing her three-year-old daughter, Kavya, by throwing her into Ana Sagar Lake late Tuesday night. After singing a lullaby and spending hours walking with the child near the lake, Anjali threw Kavya into the water and later pretended the child had gone missing.

CCTV footage and her own confession led police to conclude she acted alone, though investigations continue into her live-in partner’s possible involvement. Officials said Anjali had been under severe mental stress due to regular taunts from her partner about Kavya, who was from Anjali’s previous marriage.

Suspicious Behaviour and Police Investigation

The incident gained public attention after CCTV footage revealed Anjali carrying Kavya near Ana Sagar Lake from around 10:30 pm until approximately 1:30 am. She was seen holding or carrying the child, but later was captured alone, engrossed in her mobile phone. During a routine early-morning patrol near the lake, police intercepted Anjali and her live-in partner, Alkesh Gupta.

When questioned, Anjali claimed Kavya had suddenly gone missing during their walk, saying they had searched for her all night. However, she refused police assistance in the search, raising suspicion. Police then analysed the CCTV footage that contradicted Anjali’s statement and launched a search operation. Kavya’s body was recovered from the lake the following morning. Upon interrogation, Anjali broke down and confessed to killing her daughter by throwing her into the lake through a gap in the railing.

Context and Personal Struggles

Anjali is originally from Sakulpura, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. She separated from her first husband, Raju Singh, due to financial difficulties and later moved to Ajmer, where she entered a live-in relationship with Alkesh Gupta, also from Varanasi. Both worked at a hotel in Ajmer, where Anjali was a receptionist. According to police, Alkesh frequently taunted Anjali for having a daughter from her previous marriage.

Authorities believe this verbal abuse caused intense emotional stress, reportedly pushing Anjali into a tragic mental state. While Anjali reportedly acted alone in killing Kavya, police are investigating Alkesh’s possible role or knowledge of the crime.

The couple’s complex personal dynamics reflect broader issues faced by many women dealing with social stigma, mental health challenges, and unstable domestic situations.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This deeply distressing case sheds light on the urgent need for society to better address mental health and domestic strife, particularly for vulnerable women and children. While the act itself is horrifying, it should prompt reflection on the invisible pressures many families endure silently.

The Logical Indian believes fostering communities that offer emotional support, counselling, and protection can help prevent such tragedies. Providing help and empathy before crises escalate is the path to lasting change.
