In Kumawas village, Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan, a man named Shyochand Bavariya allegedly shot and killed more than 25 stray dogs over two days, August 2 and 3, 2025. A video capturing two men chasing and shooting the dogs while another person filmed went viral online, generating widespread condemnation from animal rights activists and general public alike.

Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the Animal Cruelty Act and Arms Act and are actively investigating the incident. Bharatiya Janata Party representatives and other officials have condemned the act, while some villagers claim the dogs were attacking their livestock, causing significant financial losses. Efforts to balance animal welfare and local livelihoods remain contentious in this case.

Disturbing Video Illustrates Cruel Violence Towards Stray Dogs

The video, which circulated widely on social media platforms, shows two men speeding through the village on a motorcycle as they aggressively chase groups of stray dogs. One of the men is seen firing a rifle directly at the animals, resulting in several dogs being shot dead in broad daylight. The gruesome aftermath reveals bloodied dog carcasses scattered across village lanes and fields.

A third person records the event on another motorcycle, although his involvement in the act is still unclear. Superintendent of Police Brijesh Jyoti Upadhyay confirmed the video’s authenticity and stated that police registered a case immediately after the footage surfaced. Bavariya, identified as residing in Dumra village, remains at large, but authorities are working to apprehend him and investigate any accomplices. Police have stressed that strict legal action will be taken against those involved.

Livelihood Concerns Amidst Animal Cruelty Outcry

Locals defending the man’s actions allege that stray dogs had attacked their goats repeatedly, reportedly killing more than 50 animals, resulting in major economic losses for many cattle rearers. These grievances have led some villagers to support the violent response and demand compensation from the government for their losses.

Senior district officials and tehsildars visited Kumawas to assess the situation following protests but encountered resistance from some residents. This incident highlights the complexity of rural conflicts where the protection of livelihoods clashes with animal rights and welfare. The lack of effective, humane mechanisms to address issues relating to stray animals further exacerbates tensions, prompting desperate and terrible measures.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This harrowing episode underscores the urgent necessity of fostering empathy and respectful coexistence between human communities and animals. Violence and cruelty, though borne out of frustration and fear, should never be condoned or used as solutions.

The Logical Indian advocates for collaborative approaches involving local communities, animal welfare organisations, and government authorities, focusing on scientifically backed strategies such as sterilisation, vaccination drives, and structured compensation programmes for livestock losses. Constructive dialogue and transparent, humane policies can prevent such distressing acts and contribute to peaceful coexistence.
