Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open debate on November 2, 2026, following a fresh exchange between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress over allegations of electoral irregularities and foreign interference.
The development came hours after Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenged Gandhi to debate the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, electronic voting machines (EVMs) and alleged infiltration in Parliament, stating that the government was ready to convene a special session.
Gandhi’s challenge to Modi followed the Prime Minister’s remarks accusing the Opposition of becoming an obstructionist force and suggesting that certain elements were attempting to divide the country. In response, Gandhi alleged that Modi had become and remained Prime Minister with foreign assistance, challenging him to an open debate at any venue and time.
The exchange has intensified the political confrontation over electoral integrity, with the Opposition demanding accountability from the Election Commission of India (ECI), while the government and the BJP have rejected the allegations of electoral manipulation.
Shah Demands Debate
Speaking at the BJP’s ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ padayatra in Hyderabad on Monday, Shah accused Gandhi and other Opposition parties of disrupting parliamentary proceedings while raising questions about the electoral process. He challenged the Congress leader to participate in a parliamentary debate covering EVMs, SIR and alleged infiltration, saying the government was prepared to convene a special session to discuss the issues. “Rahul ji, you don’t allow Parliament to run.
Be it EVMs, SIR, infiltrators, I challenge you from Hyderabad. We are ready to convene a special session of Parliament. Come for debate,” Shah said, according to news agency PTI. He also accused the Congress and its allies of opposing SIR to protect alleged illegal immigrants, particularly those from Bangladesh, whom he claimed were part of their vote bank. Shah dismissed the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan as a ‘Ghuspetiya Bachao’ (Save Infiltrators) rally.
The Congress and other Opposition parties, however, have maintained that electoral roll revisions could exclude eligible voters and undermine their democratic rights. The allegations and counterclaims have made the revision exercise a major point of political contention.
Modi Gandhi Exchange
Gandhi’s challenge to Modi followed the Prime Minister’s address at the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, marking the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Modi criticised the Opposition, saying its role in a democracy was to question government policies but alleging that it had instead become an obstructionist force.
He also warned that certain forces were attempting to divide the country and spread rumours through social media, raising questions about their alleged links with groups abroad. Responding in a post on X, Gandhi accused Modi of relying on foreign support to become and remain Prime Minister. “Mr Modi, stop lying to this nation. You became PM because of foreign help. You remain PM because of foreign help,” he wrote, also alleging that foreign entities supported India’s financial system and that foreign social media platforms backed the Prime Minister.
Gandhi challenged Modi to an open debate, declaring, “Any stage, any time. Come if you have the guts.” He further claimed that Modi would be unwilling to accept the challenge. These allegations were made by Gandhi in a political exchange; his post did not provide evidence substantiating the claims.
The dispute came a day after the INDIA bloc’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally in Delhi, where Opposition leaders protested against alleged electoral irregularities and demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Election Commission has defended the revision process, stating that electoral roll updates are intended to identify duplicate and ineligible entries and maintain accurate voter lists.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The latest exchange between the ruling party and the Opposition highlights the importance of transparency, accountability and constructive dialogue in a functioning democracy. Electoral integrity is a matter of public trust, and allegations concerning voter registration, EVMs and the conduct of elections deserve serious consideration rather than being reduced to political accusations.
At the same time, claims of foreign interference or electoral manipulation must be supported by verifiable evidence, and public figures should be held accountable for the statements they make.
Mr Modi, stop lying to this nation. You became PM because of foreign help. You remain PM because of foreign help. Your financial system is fully controlled and supported by foreigners. Foreign social media fully backs you. I challenge you to an open debate about this. Any stage, any time. Come if you have the guts. You won’t dare, because you are terrified of what I know about you.
