Raghav Chadha, now a BJP Rajya Sabha MP after recently leaving the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) along with six other MPs, is set to meet Droupadi Murmu on May 5 to raise concerns over the alleged misuse of state machinery by the AAP-led government in Punjab. Chadha, accompanied by three other MPs, is expected to submit a complaint alleging targeted action against leaders who switched from AAP to the BJP.
The meeting is scheduled ahead of a separate interaction between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the President later the same day, highlighting an escalating political confrontation with both sides presenting competing claims.
Allegations Of Targeted Action And Political Vendetta
Chadha has accused the Punjab government of engaging in “political vendetta” by allegedly using police and administrative machinery to target MPs who recently quit AAP and merged with the BJP. He is expected to highlight instances of legal action, including police cases against some of the defectors, arguing that these moves are retaliatory in nature.
BJP leaders have echoed these concerns, calling the actions politically motivated. Meanwhile, the AAP government has denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that all actions are being carried out within the legal framework and are not influenced by political considerations.
Backdrop Of Defections And Escalating Political Conflict
The development follows a major political shift in April, when seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, including Chadha, merged with the BJP under provisions of the anti-defection law, significantly altering the party’s strength in Parliament. The move triggered a political storm in Punjab, with AAP accusing the BJP of engineering defections to destabilise its government.
In response, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has also sought a meeting with the President, reportedly to challenge the validity of the merger and raise concerns about its implications for democratic mandate. The back-to-back meetings underscore how the conflict has escalated from a state-level dispute to a national constitutional issue.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This episode reflects the growing strain on democratic institutions during periods of political realignment. Allegations of vendetta and counter-allegations of destabilisation risk eroding public trust if not addressed transparently. While legal scrutiny is essential in any democracy, it must remain free from political bias and be perceived as fair by all stakeholders. At the same time, large-scale defections raise deeper questions about political accountability and the mandate of elected representatives. As both sides approach the highest constitutional office with competing claims, can India’s institutions ensure neutrality while safeguarding democratic integrity and public confidence?
