The death of a 17-year-old Class 12 student in Punjab’s Amritsar district has triggered widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny of how educational institutions deal with financially vulnerable students.
Amjot Kaur Aulakh, a student of Disciplined Disciple International School in Fatehgarh Churian, allegedly died after facing prolonged mental distress linked to unpaid school fees of around ₹20,000, according to her family.
The case gained statewide attention after a video purportedly recorded by the teenager before her death surfaced on social media, in which she reportedly spoke about the emotional pressure she was experiencing.
Following the video’s circulation and complaints lodged by the family, Punjab Police registered an FIR and launched a formal investigation into the allegations against members of the school administration.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that a case had been registered on the basis of the student’s video statement and that all evidence, including family testimonies and digital material, was being examined.
While the family alleges repeated humiliation and harassment by school authorities over pending fees, the allegations remain under investigation and no criminal liability has yet been established.
Family Alleges Repeated Pressure
According to relatives, Amjot was a bright and ambitious student whose family had been struggling financially, resulting in pending school fees. Family members allege that she was repeatedly called out over the unpaid dues and subjected to mental pressure by members of the school administration.
They claim that what initially began as reminders about fee payments gradually became a recurring source of embarrassment and emotional distress for the teenager.
The family further alleges that she felt increasingly isolated and humiliated as the issue continued to be raised in an academic setting. According to reports, Amjot consumed a poisonous substance after returning home and later succumbed despite medical treatment.
Her death has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents, activists, and social media users demanding accountability and urging authorities to ensure a fair investigation.
The viral video, which investigators are currently examining, has intensified public anger and fuelled conversations around student welfare, mental health, and institutional responsibility.
Investigation Underway Amid Public Outrage
The incident has evolved from a local tragedy into a wider public debate on the treatment of students facing financial hardship in educational institutions. Police officials have stated that investigators are reviewing school records, collecting witness statements, and examining digital evidence, including the video that surfaced online.
Authorities have emphasised that findings will be based on evidence gathered during the course of the investigation and that all concerned parties will have an opportunity to present their version of events.
At the time of reporting, no detailed public response from the school administration regarding the allegations had been widely reported.
The case has also reignited discussions about previous incidents across India where students allegedly faced humiliation, exclusion, or disciplinary action due to unpaid fees.
Education experts and child-rights advocates have repeatedly argued that fee-related disputes should be addressed directly with parents or guardians rather than in ways that may affect a student’s dignity, emotional well-being, or sense of belonging within a school environment.
Mental health professionals have similarly highlighted that adolescents are particularly vulnerable to public criticism, social stigma, and emotional stress, making supportive school systems and counselling services essential.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The tragic death of a young student in Punjab is a deeply distressing reminder that educational institutions carry responsibilities that extend far beyond academics. While the allegations in this case are still under investigation and due process must be respected, the incident highlights the urgent need for schools to adopt compassionate and child-centred approaches when dealing with families facing financial difficulties.
No student should feel defined by their economic circumstances or made to carry the burden of issues that are ultimately between institutions and parents. The case also underscores the importance of accessible mental health support, effective grievance redressal mechanisms, and policies that safeguard the dignity of every child. As the investigation proceeds and facts emerge, the focus must remain on accountability, empathy, and ensuring that similar tragedies are prevented in the future.
