Police use lathi-charge to quell violence after Congress and BJP workers clash outside a Thirukanur polling booth following BJP candidate A. Namassivayam and his wife’s voting.

A scuffle broke out between Congress and BJP workers on April 9, 2026, outside a government school polling booth in Thirukanur, Puducherry. The violence erupted shortly after BJP candidate A. Namassivayam and his wife, Vasanthi, cast their votes.

To prevent the situation from escalating, police were forced to resort to a lathi charge to disperse the gathering and restore order. While the skirmish caused a temporary disruption, officials confirmed that the polling process resumed shortly after security was tightened.

Police Resort To Force Amid Political Clash

According to eyewitnesses, a large number of party workers from both the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had gathered near the entrance of the school. Tensions reached a boiling point as the two groups exchanged slogans, which quickly devolved into physical altercations.

Speaking on the incident, a senior police official stated, “The situation was becoming volatile and threatened the safety of voters. We had to intervene with a mild lathi charge to ensure the crowd dispersed and the sanctity of the polling station was maintained.”

No major injuries were reported, though the sudden use of force caused momentary panic among local residents who had lined up to exercise their franchise.

High-Stakes Contest In Mannadipet

The Thirukanur region, part of the Mannadipet constituency, has been a focus of intense political rivalry this election cycle. A. Namassivayam, a key figure in the BJP-AINRC alliance, is facing a significant challenge from the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).

The 2026 Puducherry Assembly Elections are being held across 30 constituencies, with the Union Territory witnessing high voter turnout despite sporadic reports of friction.

This incident follows weeks of high-octane campaigning, including roadshows by national leaders, which have kept the political atmosphere in the region highly charged.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that the strength of a democracy lies in the ballot, not the baton or the fist. While political passion is a sign of a vibrant society, it must never cross the line into violence or intimidation. We condemn the scuffle that broke out in Thirukanur, as such incidents only serve to deter peaceful citizens from participating in the democratic process.

True progress is achieved through dialogue and a commitment to harmony, even in the face of differing ideologies. We urge all political parties and their supporters to maintain calm and respect the democratic decorum as the UT awaits its mandate.
