Mass civil demonstrations swept the streets of New York City on Thursday outside the United Nations headquarters as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived to address the UN General Assembly.
New York City police detained more than 100 demonstrators including Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon, Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder, and local elected officials after civil disobedience actions blocked major traffic corridors along First Avenue. While peace activists, organised notably by Jewish Voice for Peace, called for an immediate halt to civilian casualties and US military support, Prime Minister Netanyahu delivered a resolute defence from the podium, criticising dissenting global envoys who staged a simultaneous walkout inside the assembly hall.
Streets Filled With Dissent
Clad in uniform white T-shirts bearing slogans like “Fund people not bombs” and “Free Palestine”, hundreds of demonstrators occupied roadways before bicycle-mounted NYPD units cordoned off the area and carried out mass zip-tie detentions.
Amongst those taken into police custody were actor Susan Sarandon, Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, New York City Council member Chi Ossé, and Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier. “What is being done to Gaza, the obliteration of an entire society, in our name, with our tax dollars, this is our responsibility to speak out against,” stated Manijeh Moradian, an associate professor who participated in the demonstration. As activists were escorted to police transit vans, chants echoed across Manhattan, demanding that international leaders prioritise human lives over armament supplies.
Diplomatic Walkouts
The confrontation outside mirrored tensions inside the UN assembly chamber.
As Prime Minister Netanyahu approached the lectern, dozens of national diplomatic delegations rose and walked out of the hall in protest. Remaining undeterred, Netanyahu labelled the departing delegates “moral cowards”, mounted an unapologetic defence of Israel’s ongoing regional military campaigns, and condemned Western leaders for what he characterised as caving to external political pressure. Ahead of the address, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had publicly stated that the US administration ought to respect the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant regarding alleged war crimes in Gaza.
The simultaneous friction inside the assembly and across New York’s avenues underscored the deep ethical divide surrounding the prolonged conflict.
