Protests Intensify in Los Angeles After Trump Deploys 2,000 National Guard Troops Amid ICE Raids

Widespread protests and political backlash erupt in Los Angeles after ICE detains 121 undocumented immigrants and federal troops are deployed.

Protests in Los Angeles have intensified following a series of high-profile Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids that resulted in the detention of at least 121 undocumented individuals over the weekend of June 6-8, 2025.

The raids, part of a nationwide crackdown reportedly detaining around 2,000 people daily, have sparked widespread outrage in immigrant-heavy communities, leading to large-scale demonstrations, clashes with law enforcement, and over 56 arrests.

In response, President Donald Trump authorised the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the city, a move sharply criticised by California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The protests have included freeway blockades, fires, and confrontations, highlighting deep tensions around immigration enforcement and community safety.

Rising Tensions and Community Outcry

The ICE raids targeted workplaces, homes, and public spaces across Los Angeles, aiming to detain undocumented immigrants suspected of violating federal immigration laws. Over the course of three days, federal agents arrested 121 individuals, including parents, workers, and long-term residents.

The raids were met with immediate backlash from local communities, who viewed the operations as aggressive and disruptive to families and neighbourhoods. Protesters gathered in large numbers outside federal buildings and along major highways, including the 101 Freeway, blocking traffic and chanting slogans demanding justice and humane treatment.

Several demonstrations turned confrontational as police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and batons to disperse crowds. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell acknowledged the complexity of maintaining order, stating, “While many protesters are peaceful, a minority have engaged in violent acts that endanger public safety.”

Community leaders, such as Angelica Salas from the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, condemned the raids as “terrorising hardworking families and sowing fear in our communities.”

Federal Enforcement and Political Fallout

President Trump’s decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops, alongside 500 Marines on standby, marked a significant escalation in federal response to the unrest. The troops have been tasked with supporting local law enforcement in maintaining order and securing federal facilities.

However, this militarisation has drawn fierce criticism from state and city officials. Governor Gavin Newsom labelled the deployment “unlawful and inflammatory,” urging the White House to reconsider and emphasising the importance of community trust.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the move as “chaotic,” warning that it risks exacerbating tensions rather than calming them. National political figures, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, joined the chorus of dissent, calling for a more compassionate approach to immigration enforcement. Meanwhile, ICE officials defended their actions as necessary to uphold immigration laws and maintain national security, pledging to continue operations in sanctuary cities despite local opposition.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The escalating conflict in Los Angeles serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between enforcing laws and respecting human dignity.

The Logical Indian believes that immigration challenges must be addressed through empathy, dialogue, and policies that uphold the rights and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their status. Heavy-handed enforcement and military interventions risk deepening divisions, fostering fear, and undermining the social fabric of diverse communities.

True progress lies in fostering understanding, compassion, and coexistence. As this situation unfolds, we ask our readers: How can societies ensure that the pursuit of justice and security does not come at the expense of kindness and humanity?
