President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to meet a 10-member delegation of the Opposition INDIA bloc at 8 pm on Friday, October 9, 2026, to discuss concerns over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the bloc’s demand for Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
The meeting comes after three consecutive days of protests in New Delhi, during which Opposition leaders accused the poll panel of irregularities in the voter-list revision process. The delegation is expected to include Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary MA Baby and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav.
The Opposition hopes to present its concerns to the President, while the dispute has intensified the political confrontation over the electoral process and the accountability of constitutional institutions.
Opposition Seeks Presidential Intervention
According to reports citing sources, Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed the appointment on Friday morning after the INDIA bloc sought time to meet the President. The delegation will raise questions about the functioning of the Election Commission, alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise and its demand for Kumar’s resignation. The President’s office has agreed to receive a delegation limited to 10 members, according to reports. The meeting marks an attempt by the Opposition to take its concerns beyond street protests and place them before the country’s constitutional head.
The INDIA bloc has argued that the integrity of electoral rolls is central to free and fair elections. Its leaders have questioned the manner in which voter details are being revised and have alleged that certain decisions by the poll panel could affect voters’ ability to exercise their democratic rights. These remain allegations made by the Opposition and should be distinguished from established findings. The meeting with Murmu is expected to provide the alliance with an opportunity to formally convey its objections and seek attention to the issues it has raised.
The political significance of the meeting extends beyond the demand for the CEC’s resignation. The controversy has brought the Election Commission’s independence, transparency and responsibility to the forefront of public debate. For voters, the central concern is whether electoral rolls accurately include eligible citizens and provide a reliable basis for elections. Any dispute over the process therefore carries implications for public confidence in democratic institutions.
Three Days Of Protests
The meeting follows a series of demonstrations by INDIA bloc leaders and Members of Parliament in Delhi. The protests have centred on the SIR process and demands for Kumar to step down. On Tuesday, October 6, Opposition leaders attempted to march towards the Election Commission’s office but were stopped by police. Several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were detained during the protest and later released. The demonstrations continued over the following days, reflecting the alliance’s decision to intensify its campaign against the poll panel.
On Thursday, October 8, Opposition leaders also gathered at Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial in New Delhi, as part of their continuing agitation. The protests have involved Congress leaders and representatives of other INDIA bloc parties, with the alliance seeking to build pressure on the Election Commission to address its concerns. The repeated demonstrations have also brought questions about protest arrangements, policing and the space available for political dissent into public discussion.
The Opposition had sought an appointment with the President earlier in the week. Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal said on Thursday that the bloc had requested a meeting and was awaiting a response from Rashtrapati Bhavan. Reports said the alliance initially sought an appointment between October 7 and 9 and provided the names of the leaders who would attend. The confirmation of Friday evening’s meeting now gives the delegation a formal opportunity to present its position.
The Election Commission has previously defended its decisions concerning the SIR process amid criticism from Opposition parties. In the wider dispute over electoral-roll revisions, the poll panel has maintained that its decisions are taken through the prescribed process, while the Opposition has questioned the transparency and consequences of specific changes. The allegations and counterclaims make it important for the concerns to be examined through verifiable records, clear explanations and established procedures rather than political assertions alone.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Electoral rolls are a foundation of representative democracy, and public confidence in their accuracy is essential. Political parties have a legitimate role in questioning decisions they believe could undermine the voting rights of citizens, while the Election Commission must be able to explain its procedures transparently and respond to credible concerns.
The meeting between President Murmu and the INDIA bloc offers an opportunity for dialogue at a time when tensions have escalated through repeated protests. However, a meeting alone cannot settle the dispute; meaningful progress will require evidence-based scrutiny, clear communication and appropriate institutional action wherever irregularities are established. Equally, political disagreement should not deepen hostility or undermine public trust without substantiated evidence.
Democratic institutions are strengthened when criticism is heard, allegations are impartially examined and citizens’ rights remain paramount. How can the Election Commission and political parties work together to resolve concerns over voter lists while protecting every eligible citizen’s right to vote?
