Prachi Gaikwad Clinches Comeback Gold
Prachi Gaikwad’s gold medal victory in the women’s 50-metre rifle three positions event emerged as one of the highlights of India’s campaign at the Cairo competition. The event requires shooters to compete across three challenging positions kneeling, prone, and standing demanding both precision and endurance.
In the final, Prachi registered a total of 354.6 points to narrowly defeat Individual Neutral Athlete Darya Chuprys, who finished with 354.4 points, while Elena Kretinina claimed bronze with 343.3 points. Prachi’s triumph was particularly remarkable because she entered the final after qualifying sixth and had to climb up the rankings during the decisive stages.
Her strong performance in the standing stage ultimately allowed her to edge past her closest competitor and seal the gold medal. In the men’s 10-metre air rifle event, Naren Pranav Vanita Suresh also delivered a steady performance to secure bronze, finishing with 229.5 points in the final.
Earlier in qualification, he had already demonstrated impressive consistency by shooting 630.9 to finish among the top contenders and qualify for the medal round. His podium finish not only added another medal to India’s tally but also showcased the depth of talent among India’s junior shooters.
With multiple Indian shooters qualifying for the finals in different events, the team’s performance in Cairo has reinforced its reputation as one of the most formidable contingents in junior shooting competitions.
India’s Junior Shooters Shine Globally
The ISSF Junior Shooting World Cup is among the most important global competitions for emerging shooters, bringing together young athletes from dozens of countries to compete across rifle, pistol, and shotgun disciplines. Held from April 19 to 27 in Cairo, the event provides a crucial international platform for junior athletes to gain experience and showcase their skills before progressing to senior competitions.
India has fielded a strong contingent in the current edition of the tournament and has consistently produced podium finishes across events. Earlier in the competition, India had already secured multiple medals, including a gold medal in the men’s 10-metre air pistol event won by Shiva Narwal, which set the tone for the team’s campaign.
Prachi Gaikwad’s victory marked another significant milestone for the team and helped India continue its strong run at the top of the medal standings. By the time of her victory, India had accumulated several medals across categories, underscoring the effectiveness of the country’s youth development programmes in shooting sports.
The performance of these young athletes is also seen as a reflection of India’s steadily expanding shooting ecosystem. Over the past decade, the sport has witnessed growing participation, improved training infrastructure, and increased institutional support through academies and national programmes.
Junior competitions like the World Cup play a vital role in preparing athletes for elite international events, including world championships and future Olympic cycles. For many of these athletes, the Cairo tournament represents an important stepping stone in their journey toward representing India at the highest level.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Prachi Gaikwad and Naren Pranav Vanita Suresh’s achievements serve as powerful reminders of the dedication and resilience that young athletes bring to the sporting arena. Shooting is a discipline that requires extraordinary focus, patience, and mental strength qualities that these young competitors have demonstrated on a global stage.
Celebrating such milestones goes beyond applauding medals; it also means recognising the countless hours of practice, the support of coaches and families, and the systems that help athletes realise their potential. When young sportspersons succeed internationally, they inspire thousands of others to dream bigger and believe that excellence can come from dedication and perseverance.
