In a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh, Ponung Doming has become the first woman army officer from the state to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army.

Hailing from Pasighat in East Siang district, Doming joined the Indian Army in 2008. She was elevated from the post of a Major on September 23, after serving for 13 years under various capacities including India’s International UN Peacekeeping force deployed at Congo.

Her Achievement was lauded by National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval who took to Twitter to congratulate her and called her an ’empowered and daring woman.’

Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu also took to Twitter to congratulate her for the achievement. “A proud moment for all of us … Major #PonungDoming creates history. She is first woman Army officer from #Arunachal to be elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the #IndianArmy,” Mr Khandu tweeted.

Last month, Wing Commander Shaliza Dhami became the first woman officer of the Indian Air Force to become the Flight Commander of a flying unit. She took charge of a Chetak helicopter unit at the Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh on August 26. Giving wings to dream higher, PM Modi announced the induction of women soldiers in a combat role. The women Corps of Military Police (CMP) batch, whose prime responsibility will be policing army cantonments, will see a hundred women jawans being recruited. Presently, the Army, Navy and Air Force only have women officers, not jawans.
