A Polish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed on Thursday evening during a rehearsal for the Radom Air Show in central Poland, resulting in the death of a Polish Army pilot. The incident occurred around 1730 GMT near the 31st Tactical Air Base close to Poznan.

Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the pilot’s death and expressed his condolences, calling it a great loss for both the Air Force and the Polish Army. No bystanders were harmed, but the airshow scheduled for the weekend has been cancelled. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Tragic Crash During Airshow Rehearsal

The F-16 fighter jet was performing a barrel-roll manoeuvre when it suddenly crashed onto the runway, causing a fiery explosion and damaging the airstrip. Video footage circulating on social media shows the aircraft engulfed in flames, skidding for several meters post-impact. Authorities were quick to respond, yet the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene.

Government spokesman Adam Szlapka confirmed the incident and reiterated the deep sorrow felt by the nation. The pilot was described by Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz as an officer who served his country with dedication and courage, a sentiment echoed by many in the Polish defence community.

“I’m at the scene of a tragedy. A Polish Army pilot died in an F-16 crash—an officer who always served his country with dedication and great courage. I pay tribute to his memory. I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones. This is a great loss for the Air Force and the entire Polish Army,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz on X.

Background and Broader Context

The Radom Air Show, a significant annual event showcasing military aviation, was set to take place later this weekend but has been cancelled following this incident. The involved aircraft was from the 31st Tactical Air Base, located near Poznan, highlighting the regional military presence.

While training exercises for airshows are routine to ensure pilots’ precision during performances, they carry inherent risks as demonstrated by this fatal crash. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with initial details yet to be disclosed.
