Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his first visit to Manipur since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023, focusing on peace and development. He inaugurated projects worth over ₹1,200 crore in Imphal and laid foundation stones for additional projects valued at ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur, totalling ₹8,500 crore.

Modi interacted with displaced communities and reiterated the Central Government’s commitment to peace talks and inclusive growth amid ongoing tensions in the state.

Development and Dialogue at the Forefront

Modi’s two-day visit included stops in Churachandpur, a Kuki-majority district, and Imphal, predominantly Meitei. Despite heavy rain, the Prime Minister travelled by road to Churachandpur when his helicopter journey was disrupted. At public gatherings, Modi expressed solidarity with Manipur’s people, stating, “The Government of India is with you.”

Projects unveiled include the Manipur Urban Road Project (over ₹3,600 crore), an Infotech Development initiative (₹500 crore), a new police headquarters, and an all-women’s market, aimed at boosting connectivity, employment, and governance. The Governor of Manipur emphasised government efforts to curb illegal settlements, vital to maintaining peace and security.

The Human Cost of Conflict

Manipur remains scarred by violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which has claimed over 260 lives and displaced tens of thousands. Many internally displaced persons (IDPs) continue to live in relief camps. During his visit, the Prime Minister met families affected by the unrest in Imphal’s Kangla Fort complex, assuring them of the Centre’s commitment to restore normalcy.

Modi underscored that peace is essential for development, referencing past successes in resolving conflicts in the Northeast through dialogue and mutual understanding. Opposition parties criticised the delay in Modi’s visit, urging more urgent action to end the state’s prolonged crisis.
