Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bairabi-Sairang railway line on September 12, 2025, marking a historic moment as Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, was connected to the Indian Railways network for the very first time.
This 51.38-kilometre broad-gauge railway line, stretching from Bairabi on the Assam-Mizoram border to Sairang near Aizawl, effectively integrates the state with the rest of the country’s rail infrastructure. Modi also flagged off the inaugural Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express alongside two other express trains connecting Guwahati and Kolkata. The electrification of the line is underway, with diesel engines serving the route from Bairabi to Guwahati until full electrification is achieved.
This landmark achievement aligns with the government’s vision to connect every state capital by rail, unlocking new opportunities in travel, trade, and employment for the people of Mizoram.

Engineering Feats and Economic Promise
Constructing the Bairabi-Sairang line was a formidable engineering challenge due to Mizoram’s hilly terrain, dense forests, and seismic activity. The project includes 48 tunnels and 142 bridges, 55 major and 87 minor, including Bridge No. 144 near Sairang, which stands 114 metres tall, surpassing Delhi’s Qutub Minar and ranking as the tallest pier railway bridge in India.
The line also introduces four new railway stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. Built at an investment exceeding ₹8,000 crore, the railway not only symbolizes engineering prowess but also promises widespread socio-economic benefits. It will substantially reduce travel costs and time, easing the movement of goods and passengers.
Local farmers like Lalranthara Rama, who grow oranges, pineapples, and turmeric, anticipate expanded market access and reduced post-harvest losses. Officials estimate that the rail connectivity could boost Mizoram’s Gross State Domestic Product by ₹500 to ₹700 crore annually, alongside stimulating tourism and job creation.

Background and Regional Context
The idea of linking Mizoram by rail dates back to the late 1990s, with formal sanction of the project around 2008-2009. Despite numerous challenges, including difficult geology and weather-induced landslides, the Northeast Frontier Railway completed construction in about a decade, between 2015 and 2025. The Bairabi-Sairang railway is a crucial component of India’s broader Act East Policy, which seeks to strengthen connectivity in the Northeast and enhance links with Southeast Asia.
This project complements the regional North-East Economic Corridor and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport framework. The railway is expected to improve the reliability of supplies, decrease dependency on precarious road networks, and facilitate seamless integration of Mizoram with the national economy.
Alongside the railway inauguration, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation for multiple road projects, including the 45-km Aizawl Bypass, aimed at boosting local accessibility and further advancing regional development.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The inauguration of Mizoram’s first railway line is more than just an infrastructure success; it is a beacon of inclusive growth, cultural unity, and sustainable development. Such projects reflect a commitment to bridging historically isolated communities with the broader nation, nurturing economic opportunity and social harmony through improved connectivity.
The Logical Indian views this milestone as an embodiment of kindness and empathy, fostering peaceful coexistence by knitting diverse regions together. This development invites reflection on how infrastructure can empower marginalized areas without compromising cultural identity or environmental sustainability.
A landmark day for Mizoram as it joins India's railway map! Key infrastructure projects are also being initiated. Speaking at a programme in Aizawl. https://t.co/MxM6c2WZHZ
