On August 2, 2025, nearly 10 crore farmers across India will receive Rs 2,000 each as part of the 20th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Varanasi today at around 11 AM to officiate the release of the 20th instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme, transferring over Rs 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of nearly 9.7 crore farmers across India.

Alongside this, he is inaugurating and laying the foundation stones for multiple development projects in his parliamentary constituency worth approximately Rs 2,200 crore. These projects span key sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, sports, tourism, urban development, and cultural heritage. Security in Varanasi has been significantly tightened due to the VVIP movement.

The central government will transfer approximately Rs 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of eligible small and marginal farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This financial aid aims to ease the economic challenges faced by farmers and promote agricultural sustainability.

Farmers are urged to confirm their inclusion in the beneficiary list to ensure timely access to funds, with officials emphasising transparency and efficiency in the disbursal process.

A Nationwide Lifeline for Farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has reiterated its commitment to supporting India’s agrarian community, confirming that about 9.7 crore eligible farmers will receive Rs 2,000 each in this instalment. The PM-KISAN scheme delivers a total annual support of Rs 6,000 in three equal parts, ensuring consistent income support to landholding farmer families.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, after convening a high-level meeting, highlighted the collaborative efforts among 731 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), agricultural universities, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to maximise scheme awareness and beneficiary enrolment across states and districts. Government officials have framed the payment event as both a celebration and a mission, recognising farmers’ crucial role in sustaining the nation’s food production and rural economy.

In addition to fund transfer, stakeholders are mobilising to ensure farmers are aware of the scheme’s benefits and how to access their payments smoothly. The utilisation of digital tools and grassroots workers such as Krishi Sakhis, drone didis, and bank Sakhis facilitates direct outreach, especially in remote and underserved rural areas. This extensive network helps maintain the accuracy of beneficiary lists and reduces delays in payments.

Background and Impact of PM-KISAN

Since its launch in December 2018, PM-KISAN has become one of India’s largest direct cash support programmes aimed at the agricultural sector. Over 19 previous instalments, the government has transferred upwards of Rs 3.69 lakh crore to nearly 9.7 crore farmers, promoting financial security and enabling better investment in crop production and agri-inputs. The scheme specifically targets small and marginal landholding farmers, who often face credit constraints and unpredictable incomes due to factors like weather, market volatility, and rising input costs.

To enhance transparency and reduce fraudulent claims, the government employs Aadhaar-based electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification, updated land records, and secure Direct Benefit Transfer mechanisms. Local government functionaries, along with agricultural extension officers, coordinate to update and verify beneficiary data regularly, while outreach programmes educate farmers on their rights and responsibilities under the scheme. This ensures that support reaches those most in need, while working towards minimising errors and exclusion.

How to Check Your PM-KISAN Beneficiary Status

Farmers are encouraged to verify their status in the PM-KISAN payment list to ensure they receive the upcoming instalment without delay. The process is straightforward and accessible via the official PM-KISAN website:

  1. Visit https://pmkisan.gov.in.
  2. Navigate to the “Farmer Corner” section and select “Beneficiary Status.”
  3. Select your State, District, Block, and Village from the dropdown menus.
  4. Enter your Aadhaar number or registered mobile phone number.
  5. Click on “Get Report” to view your current beneficiary status and payment details.

Completing Aadhaar-based e-KYC and updating bank account information is mandatory for fund disbursal. Farmers who encounter discrepancies or delays are advised to reach out to local agricultural offices or helpdesks designated under the scheme.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The consistent rollout of financial assistance through PM-KISAN stands as a strong commitment by the government to uplift India’s farmers—who form the backbone of the country’s food system and rural economy.

While these direct cash transfers are crucial in providing immediate financial relief and encouraging sustainable farming practices, the real value of the scheme lies in its ability to foster dignity, resilience, and hope within rural communities.

However, the effectiveness of PM-KISAN hinges on meticulous implementation, transparency, and inclusion. Addressing challenges such as exclusion errors, data mismatches, and fraud remains essential. Moreover, supporting farmers through knowledge-sharing, infrastructure development, and market access alongside monetary aid is important for long-term agricultural sustainability.
