Santanu Mishra’s journey is a vivid illustration of transitioning from corporate corridors to the challenging frontlines of social change. With a successful career spanning industries like power, investment banking, hospitality, and finance, Mishra’s early professional life was marked by leadership roles across sectors.
Yet, driven by the desire to channel his expertise into societal welfare, he pivoted in 2002, co-founding Smile Foundation alongside like-minded friends. Their mission was far-reaching: to create sustainable change in education, healthcare, livelihood, and women’s empowerment for India’s underserved communities.
Reflecting on those formative years, Mishra notes, “We were inspired by the thought that social equality and sustainability are now business problems which corporate leaders cannot leave solely to governments.”
By 2005, he had left his corporate comfort zone behind to lead Smile Foundation full-time, pioneering a model of Social Venture Philanthropy that champions accountability, sustainability, and scalability.

From Humble Beginnings to a National Movement
Smile Foundation’s inception was born out of a collective recognition among young professionals of their responsibility to contribute tangibly to society. What began as a modest initiative has now blossomed into one of India’s most impactful development organisations.
Today, Smile Foundation operates over 400 ongoing projects spread across more than 25 states, directly benefiting over 1.5 million children and families annually. This expansive reach is bolstered by partnerships with more than 400 corporate collaborators and the generosity of over 200,000 individual donors.
Mishra emphasises the organisation’s unique governance model rooted in blending corporate discipline with grassroots empathy, stating, “The real work is done by our teams on ground engaging directly with communities. Our role is to create systems and partnerships that scale change.”
Technology-enhanced monitoring and data analytics via cloud platforms enable rigorous and transparent tracking of programme outcomes, ensuring continuous improvement and accountability.

Innovations Driving Impact in Healthcare and Beyond
Under Santanu Mishra’s leadership, Smile Foundation has been at the forefront of innovative social interventions, especially in healthcare and education. One of their flagship initiatives is a multi-model healthcare delivery system designed to reach the remotest corners of the country.
This includes Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), Telemedicine Units, static clinics at transport hubs, and specialty health camps. From the high-altitude villages of Ladakh to the deserts of Jaisalmer, and from bustling urban slums of India’s metros to the riverine islands of the Brahmaputra, Smile Foundation ensures equitable access to healthcare services.
In the financial year 2024–25 alone, their healthcare projects benefited nearly 2 million individuals across 70 districts and 17 states, including 22 Aspirational Districts. Mishra remarked, “This recognition is a great encouragement. It belongs to over 600 doctors, paramedics, counsellors, community mobilisers, and drivers who make this possible.”
The foundation’s relentless drive is reflected in its adoption of cutting-edge technologies AI-powered diagnostic kits, electronic health records compliant with HIPAA standards, GPS tracking for real-time operations, and ReMeDi telemedicine capable of over 30 diagnostic tests further enhancing transparency, efficiency, and the quality of healthcare delivery.

Scaling Social Venture Philanthropy for Sustainable Change
Santanu Mishra’s vision extended beyond traditional charity to redefine how social impact is achieved in India. The concept of Social Venture Philanthropy (SVP), which he has been instrumental in pioneering, merges the accountability and strategic focus of venture capital with the goals of philanthropy.
This approach bridges the gap between resource-rich corporates and grassroots organisations driving meaningful change but lacking scale. Over the years, Smile Foundation has built the capacities of more than 1,000 grassroots organisations through capacity-building workshops, training programmes, and mentorship.
Mishra believes that, “If a small group of ordinary people can mobilise such vast resources and impact, it signals a new era of social change driven by dedication and collaboration.” The foundation’s model not only emphasizes measurable outcomes but also embraces sustainability, ensuring initiatives continue to deliver benefits long after direct involvement ends.
This approach has garnered widespread recognition, including several awards such as the ‘CSR Health Project of the Year 2025’, ‘Most Inspiring NGO of the Year 2025’, and the ‘Sustainability Leader of the Year 2023’ for Mishra individually.
